Re: Thoughts on buying large hulls for a rebuild?

Rebuilding a boat, a historical one may cost more than buying it on the market, unless you are living in a country where labor and raw materials are cheap. I think you can manage something like that if you are in Asia, but certainly not in your position.
I understand the allure of rebuilding a boat, some boats with historical significance should be save and rescued, and others such as family vessels or those that had sentimental values attached can't be deal in monetary terms as well.
Then there are others who have a specific idea to rebuild it for specific purpose, like how Slocum fitted his Spray for circumnavigation and Eric Taberly rebuild Pen Duick for his singlehanded races.
If you rebuild to save money then it won't be a wise deal if you aren't a boatbuilder yourself or have it done in places and raw materials are cheap.

Re: Thoughts on buying large hulls for a rebuild?

Come to think about it, the Malthese Falcon yacht was repurposed from an existing hull, and then the Aristotle Oanasis yacht was rebuilt from a military vessel. But then again they are rebuild to specific purpose and that serves as a discount for a vessel of that purpose, the rebuild would cost more than a industrially build yacht but a discount in material for a custom boat.
It cost $533.64 excluding labor, tools, help for Slocum to rebuild his Spray, it's about $14200 today, those think that Slocum only sail in Spray because it is free must have been crazy, he must have build it because they didn't exist a vessel designed for singlehanded circumnavigation at the time.
