I would like input from some hardcore cruisers on a vessel I can take to Antarctica, the South Pacific and then home for whale research in Alaska. I wonder if there is a great compromise out there that would allow a pilothouse of sorts (I'm sorta tired of freezing in Prince William Sound chasing humpbacks all summer) for bad days in the Gulf. There is a budget. About $175k. Thanks for any thoughts. shelley

Check out the steel hard/round chine market in France... they've made some serious sailing boats... and with weather the way its is along the brittany coast many have a pilot house..

Here is one that's in your price range and built by Waterline, a very respected steel boat builder. Doesn't have a pilot house though.

Your budget will not buy a capable boat of the size of Kiwi Roa - do you have a size in mind, required crew capacity & range? - although having said that it's a good time to go boat shopping. Pickings will be slim in the Americas, as touched on above look to the European markets. France, Netherlands, Germany. Consider hiring a knowledgeable consultant to assist with selection and survey. The most basic fundamental is: stick to metal!

I would choose heavy metal for the voyages that you intend to take.

You might take a look at a Baba 40 aka Panda 40/Tashiba 40 pilot house model. It would be in your budget and they have done that voyage before. They are not rockets but they aren't pigs either and they go like stink in a blow. It's a stout grp hull that I think is up to the task. They have a great layout.
