Okay... two boats owned and sailed extensively..
1974 Westerly Longbow. 6ft headroom through to the forecabin, V double, 2 Quarters and another convertable double in the saloon.
Galley along stbd side, salon to port.. seperate toilet/shower room, roomy cockpit, good tankage, excellent storage under berths and lockers. Very easy and comfortable sail..
2001 Beneteau 331. Poor storage, undersized engine, inadequate tankage... but great to sail and modern comfortable accomodation.

The Longbow served my needs as a liveaboard cruiser much more effectively.. and is as capable of crossing the Atlantic as the Bendi..
and likely as fast.. they may look like a campervan but those underwater lines off Giles's board really work..

We have to remember most people being occasional weekend coastal sailors the same time most sold new boats are just perfect for the purpose as light cruisers or racer/cruisers. Many thousands every year. And how many asks here about blue water cruiser annually? Maybe 20?

This subject came up on the docks a few.weeks ago between a few of us that have spent time cruising,
It was the consensus that by the time you end up cruising, your need for slapstick info from an internet forum is kinda on the week side.
That's why it makes me chuckle when someone boasts about cruising for years on a particular boat, and he starts asking questions about which boat he should.buy next,

If someone is asking about the workings of a boat after being on the water for years, something is wrong,
The questions normally asked,. From an experienced person are the retro fit , or upgrade questions.

It's the same thing about boats, as long as we've been cruising,I have never had a conversation with another cruiser about what type of boat he has and why. It dosent come up in real life, only on the forum.
In real life, the subjects that come up are those related to life. As, where's the closest laundry, point me to the showers, any place around with a farmers market and where's the beer

I'm sorry, but this is entirely wrong. Newbie cruisers should not listen to this type of bad advice. The correct order of these questions is:

1- Where's the cold beer?

4- Where's the crapper?
5-Where's the cold beer?
6- Where's the shower?
7- Where's the cold beer?
8- Where do I buy food?
9- By the way - where's the cold beer?

Randy - I assume your incorrect order is because you have plenty of cold beer on board!

Everything you mention is interrelated. A full keel boat with a high-enough SA/D will not be "slow" - at least not in anything but light airs. Likewise, even a full keel boat with a lower SA/D will be as fast as any other boat in heavy air.

As long as we're talking about LWL (waterline length), and non-surfing boats. Many "traditional" boats (like mine, sort of, although we have a short fin keel) have fairly long overhangs, where a more modern boat will have a longer waterline for the same length overall. With any decent wind, longer waterline almost always gives you faster average speed. Of course overhang has it's benefits: drier decks, easier anchor handling, and good looks (IMHO), to name a few.

If you're comparing a heavy full-keel boat to a lightweight surfing machine, the downwind performance will be like night and day. Please note that I'm not saying that the ultra-light boat would make a great cruiser, but actual boat performance covers a wide range.

+1 on the Westerly - and the fact it sails a lot better than she looks!, plus is very seakindly .

Of course condition is the crucial thing - 35 years old (young!) means that the decent ones are likely in a minority. Me would take a decent Bendy over a poor Westerly - on cost reasons alone......but all things being equal (which they rarely are!) the Westerly would be my "go anywhere" choice in that size and budget range, but that as much to do with personal choice than the boat being fundamentally "better" than the Bendy........both in the ballpark.

if the original poster, or for that matter, anyone, decides to follow the words of others, he may well find a boat he hates to death and cannot resell....he NEEDS to sail as many boats of differing variety as possible so he knows at least what he does not tolerate in a boat. as we are each and every one of us individual, this will be different than much of what he reads in forums....
