Good boat, for a bump up in cruising accomodations also look at the Pearson 36.

OP: whats your budget?

I paid off my son's student loans, gave him a down payment on a house and headed out. On my return I bought a 30' Cape Dory cutter. I had it repowered, new cushions and the deck completely redone to fix spongy deck and new Awl-Grip. She is steady and comfortable and stays on her feet. A real pleasure to own and sail.
Cape Dory 36 cutter is mine. John Kretshmer rated it as one of the top 10 Blue Water cruisers ever made. We're still learning it and learning to sail, but it's a solid boat and very heavily rigged. A low freeboard makes it a wet sail but also keeps it low on the water for wind resistance. It's a narrow boat at 10'6" and the cockpit is small. This makes it tight for 4 people moving around but makes it a much easier and secure boat when you're out there.
I listened to the CF input before I bought a boat and did a ton of research. We wanted a safe, secure boat that would keep us safe despite our lack of experience and we found it.
Where you sail makes a HUGE difference on the boat you need. Start there.

Re: The Perfect lifetime friend

Your question is very reasonable and one I asked several years ago.
So, eight years ago I joined a charter club in Seattle which taught me a lot about sailing and allowed me the opportunity to sail many different kinds of boats. That helped me find what I liked and what I disliked.
I took lessons, learned from others and became certified and even chartered different boats from other clubs.
I recommend Cooper Boating in Vancouver. While I have never chartered with them, I met them one evening at a boat buying seminar and they seemed very knowledgeable and interested in helping.
I have been chronicling my experience on Facebook at Sail Amore.

A boat in search of an owner for the next 20 years will find you, like mine found me.

Good luck! Maybe I'll cross your wake someday.

If you like the IP check out the IP32, I have the IP 31 and love it, but would rather have the IP 32 for the better engine access.

Re: The Perfect lifetime friend

I think HR stopped Monsun production some 35 years ago. So for a boat like this to ask it be seaworthy for another 20 years or more is like you have found one in a heated and dry hangar.

Maybe the same applies to the other makes, I can't say.

It will cost you quite some to get any less than immaculate HR to seaworthy condition and then it will take a bit more every year she is in use.

I could have one. I could fix one up. Etc. But you must measure your ability to own and use any old boat with your specific set of boat repair skills and the depth of your own pocket.

BTW Their interior somewhat ... (errr, edit) is somewhat dated.

There is a reason why new boats are more expensive than old ones.

Cheers,
b.
