I don't know if you can add more potential names to your poll, Little Otter, but I think you stumbled onto a good candidate on your other thread when you came up with Clew Less!

As Captain Jeff, I think it was, pointed out quite awhile back, you've certainly livened things up around here! I think many of us have come to regard you with some affection, because we were all in our mid-teens at one time, and more than a little bit clueless ourselves.

So, whenever I see that Little Otter has posted something, I can't help myself - I have to read it. It makes me feel young again.

This is kind of a roundabout way of suggesting that you consider naming your new vessel Little Otter. That's who you've come to be here at CF, so why not proudly carry that name on the vessel's stern? It's just my personal opinion, understand, but I think any oblique reference to mental instability, consumption of alcohol, bad behavior or sex is lame.

Thank you Tao I appreciate that very much and will try to continue to entertain everyone, but I think that Little Otter would be a good name and will see if I can add that.

Alright sorry I couldn't add the new names to the poll but if anyone likes a name already said but not on the list just or hasn't been said yet just put it down and I will make a new poll with all the choices.

Well about 1/3 of them I've seen used before on actual boats or heard over the VHF. within the past year. It's not the first time someone wanted to use a cute name for a boat. The "cute" names start out OK but then you have to pay to letter the name on the boat and are stuck with it.

A cruising boat name needs to pass the VHF radio test. Explaining the name about 200 times suddenly finds the name is less cute than expected. People in other countries almost never see the humor let alone are able to spell or pronounce it. You have to use the name a lot on the radio and people need to understand it as well as be able to spell it. Cute names cause you a lot of hassle. It's an appropriate punishment I suppose.

There may be only one set of names worse. Take multiple letters from you children's and spouses names and make up a word. It is very common on larger trawlers while the cute names get used mostly on smaller run about boats. Then of course the enormous number of fishing related cute names like "Reel Estate".

To my knowledge and I might be wrong, but if you are renaming an used boat. You have to strip the old name off the boat everywhere, not even a lifejacket can bare the old name. Then you have to intive a group of your closest friends and get a bottle of rum.

After asking Posiden to close the books on the old name. You Cheers to him and pour him a shot of rum ( which you pour over board) . After Asking him to open the books on the new name you pray to him to look after the boat and its crew and then pass the bottle of rum around to your friends and Cheers to the new boat name.

Its been a long time since I read the particulars so I might be missing a few rituals. But the point of this is to make your own mark on the vessel and the sea with Posidens permission to do so.

Cheers

Todd

I like Little Otter best, too. Most of the others are based on (pretty bad) puns.
That might be a bit different if gave a clue about you (married couple of physicians -- doctor, doctor) but pun-based boat names have been pretty much mined dry.

And, if memory serves it was Maxingout's webpage that had a good point: Most people will end up knowing you by your boat name, so think carefully before you decide to go for La Cucaracha.
