Re: That didn't go as planned

Ouch!

I'd check the prop tube as well. Great advice to hire a marine mechanic and have everything checked out.

Sorry to see and hear what the “shakedown Cruise” resulted in. With luck the marina will be more than accommodating in getting you back into the water soon.

Re: That didn't go as planned

It's a really tough start. Sorry

And you know what? After all of this, you'll have another tale to tell. I can imagine sitting dockside to some newly met cruisers and listening to this and not knowing whether to laugh or cry.

With your attitude, the rest of the summer should be a walk in the park, or...wait, I'll think of a "boaty" analogy.

It's all worth it in the end. Good luck.

I think there is a little confusion, the underside pics are Brookie’s, the beautiful ketch is the mighty Ti. I bet Brooke wished it was hers !!

If this situation really messes up your summer, please send me a pm if you’d like to join us for 7-10 days in Greece aboard Orinoco.

its always nice to get the worst experience out of the way right at the beginning. Kind of like moving to a place that is experiencing the worst heat wave in a 100 years, I like to think - good, got that one over with.

This is exactly why the master/owner/captain should always be present at any haul-out or launch. I'd be extremely careful of trusting anyone else to be responsible for sling placement. Nobody else knows your vessel as you do.

This quote brings up an interesting issue. One really needs to know where the straps are supposed to go, and unless the PO leaves you with a picture showing the boat in slings, taken in such a way as to see where the straps go, what can you do?

You can buy little arrow stickers to place where the straps go, that stick to your topsides or toerail to indicate the right place.

If you have a fowards looking depth sounder transducer, you want the strap to avoid it. We instruct them to lower the fwd strap to keel depth, then run it up along the forward edge of the keel, to avoid the two transducers in the hull.

Brookie, next time you go to the boat, make sure to mark where the straps should go. What a sad thing to have happened. Good on you for not being discouraged. Also, if you want to, you can add your boat type and size, to your avatar here. Right now, some people think Ticonderoga is your boat.

Re: That didn't go as planned

Most owners have no idea where the straps should go. That's why boatyards have certified lift operators. I've yet to encounter a situation like you had but you know what? We're all human and all make mistakes, some more unfortunate than others.

WORD TO NEWBIES: when you are considering buying a boat, and you are looking at it in the slings, use your phone and take a picture, standing exactly at right angle to the boat, so you can record where the slings are in relation to things that could be damaged during haulout.

I did for a moment. Then I realised there was no way that poor bent little prop and prop shaft could push the boat in the photo.

One of the great things about my favorite yard-master, he keeps a little book of where everything should go for each of the boats he slips.

I'm gonna have to ask him nicely for a copy of my boat's settings, as I am leaving soon.
