Teleflex single lever control removal

Hi folks
I am attempting to remove the throttle level arm from my diesel. It has the red button which depresses when in neutral. It had a set screw which removed easily. However, the lever arm does not wiggle free..or at all for that matter...it seems to be bonded solidly..like locktite was used.
Does anyone have any tips for removing a throttle lever arm.
Appreciate any ideas.

The only thing originally holding the lever on the shaft was/is a set screw at the bottom of the lever. Corrosion could be keeping yours from coming off. The standard things for corrosion is heat and penetrating oil. Believe it's an all metal control except for the red button and faceplate surround. Remove those and you should be able to use jumper cables, heat gun or a torch to apply heat. Keep heating it and quenching with penetrating oil till it comes free. Rapping it with a hammer might also help but be careful as you could break it.

Yes I thought the set screw should have loosened it but without any movement, I thought best to ask the experts (you guys!) before banging too hard with the hammer. I will attempt the heat and oil and see if that works.
There was no faceplate so I may fashion a temporary one to protect the fibreglass.
I dont think the red button comes out so the heat may affect it.

If all else fails, I may attack it from the back and dismantle it entirely.

My boat is across the border in Point Roberts so I will report back in a week or 2 once I get down there again.

IIRC the red plastic cover slips on to the metal knob. Put it away in a safe place while doing the install and still haven't figure where safe is. You may be able to pull it off without destroying it. Unfortunately am 2,000 miles away from the boat and won't be back to it till the 11th or would check to make sure that there is no other plastic on the controls.

I had to saw mine off and replaced with new.

Just a quick reminder to look for a SECOND lock screw below the one you removed.
Frequently a set screw is "locked" in place by running a second down over the first.
Maby, just check before putting too much heat to the part

I replaced mine (looks the same) in Feb. the set screw should be the only thing holding it on. Be sure to take photos of the linkage set up before pulling the assembly off. it makes it easier to put back on. Sorry I only have two pics but they may help

Oh Brother!! I've come across some of these and it is usually caused by the electrolytic interaction of two, dissimilar, metals.
Ultimately, you may have to just cut it off the shaft, using a grinder or cut off tool on the lever as it is the softer (zinc based) of the two metals.
Another option may be to disconnect the control cables, and associated linkage, from behind then pull the lever thru the hole, towards the back. Afterwards, you can immerse it in penetrating oil or heat & hammer away to your hearts' content.
Sorry, but there are no magic shortcuts that I have seen.

Yes, but you have to remove the lever BEFORE you can remove the plastic button ... which will surely be destroyed by heat if following that suggested route of removal.
Personally, I would try other methods first such as a good penetrating oil.

I'll try the penetrating oil and hammer method first.
If that fails, I'll try disassembly with lots of pictures.
(Of course if the hammer cracks it, I'll break out the saw and finish it!)
If disassembly doesnt help, its saw/grinder time.

Its good to know I can pick up a new lever if needed. Also found the manual for the throttle online. Will attempt to attach to this reply.

Hi, I also had the same problem as you and all attempts to remove it were futile.
I was in Gouvia marina in Greece at the time and mentioned it to an engineer I knew.
He removed it in no time, he used a smallish crow bar (wrecking bar), applied some pressure and gave it a tap and off it came.
Brass and alloy dont mix, he recommended I remove it annually and re apply some grease.
Done this for the last few years and was glad,as the gear shift cable broke in Turkey last year. Good Luck.

This sounds like a good possibility, get a couple of small "slim jim" pry bars (Princess Auto or CTC), use a couple of pieces of veneer or something similar to protect the Gel-Coat and using the ends that are bent at ninety degrees under the edges of the lever boss, pry it off. But i would still use a liberal soak of penetrating oil first.
BTW, I'm in Point Roberts too ... if you need to look at mine first and maybe borrow my pry bars, PM me and we can set up a date ... I live in Cloverdale but can get over to the marina in about 40 mins. Bob T.
