teak decks on steel hulls , what stops the steel under the teak rusting, or is there no steel under the teak wood ?

"Rusting" is better known as oxidation. Without exposure to oxygen, it can not oxidize.

Rust will occur on teak covered decks, especially where they have been screwed down. It can be a major problem, and you can only find it by removing the plug over the screw and then prising up the plank. Usually the plug for the screw hole will look stained, slightly different from the plugs where the water has come in. (Note to bauer: the sea water contains mineral salts as well as hydrogen and oxygen, and is reactive.) If all the plugs look rusty, run away fast, unless you want to replace the whole deck, a huge job. Imagine 3,000 holes wonderful places for water to come in to the interior after it rusts through.

(Note to Ann: thanks for the 6th grade science refresher. Obviously, what I meant from 'exposed to oxygen" includes all sources of the element oxygen, not just the presumed "air", which actually has less oxygen by weight than water. When installed correctly, a steel deck will have an impervious barrier or two from oxygen, including from the compound known as "water".)

Teak over steel causes horrendous maintenance/refit issues, over the long haul. Water finds its way beneath the teak and destroys the steel sub-deck. One of these refits going on right now in our marina--remove all the teak and paint it.

Too right. This is an old link and has no doubt been posted before, but should be essential reading for anyone contemplating a steel boat full stop but especially if it has teak, or other wooden, decking...

is there more indications as to rust in steel hulls , like where to look , what to look for as I am still thinking steel hull for me?
