Tayana 37 - Thoughts ?

Anyone have an opinion on a Tayana 37????

excellent cruising boat. deep keel and heavy. will not win too many races but will get you there in comfort....what else do you wish to know---there is a lot to know about them....like designer--i believe is bob perry.....more---just ask and someone will have the answer.....

Wanting to know if people would recommend it for long distance cruising. All looks good but is the cockpit at all comfortable. That would be a big issue with me as so much time is spent there.

We cruised one back in the early 80's. My opinions and experiences: slow sailor, lots of wood to keep up, 304 SS rusted quickly and often, SS water tanks developed pinhole leaks at the welds, Club footed jib a bit dangerous when on the foredeck. We had the rack and pinion steering which did not have the "feel" of the cable systems. No reason for the canoe stern as it minimizes the aft cockpit/deck area. We had her for a year and sold her. good luck boat shopping. But my wife says that we had a great time on her.

My friend had one and it seemed fine to me.. They enjoyed it, from what I can recall. Never really heard any complaints from them.. Did seem to sail very solid and slow, but hey, that's what sailing is all about in my book!! Good luck with your search!!

Check with Tayana Owners Group Newsletter. They have a very active owners group with many T37 owners.

There is also an active email listserve (it may be a yahoo group). They have a great reputation as world cruisers but they are also complicated boats. Issues with water tanks having to be cut out, balsa core decks (often under teak) taking on moisture, wooden masts on some. There were many different interior layouts available so boat to boat can be dramatically different. If you search on the variuos BB's you'll find comments by Perry about the design (and various ripoffs).

Always one of my favs, the interior woodwork is awesome if you like that stuff (hand carved doors and all) but beware the lower priced boats -- problems with the T-37 can be expensive.

the newer ones did not have teak decks. the iron fuel tanks need to be replaced. they are beautiful boats with deep draft
