Some other irritants:
"Flying a spinnaker." Sails are not "flown." Coats and burgees are flown. Sails are set and carried.
"Flybridge." It is a flying bridge.
"King tides" There are no King tides. There are spring tides, however.
Please forgive my irritability. I'll feel better if Clemson kicks Alabama's, um, mule!

I have no bitch with the nomenclature used by someone asking a question. I do however with those professing to be experts. Not aimed at you.
You could have added moon tide.
And being in SC I hope Clemson kicks ass. .

Paul,
You never know how deep someone's pockets are or not. I've seen a travel trailer on a pontoon boat and bet they probably enjoyed the hell out of it.
Don't be to quick to denigrate something. I can recall the days of yore, not having a piss pot or a window to throw it out of.
I used carpet tile for a headliner on the wife's VW.

Amen. Perhaps the greatest sailboat interior I ever saw was on a Ted Hood-designed ocean racer. It was at some race in either the east end of Lake Erie or the west end of Lake Ontario many years ago. Everything was simple, strong and in plain sight. There was not a single element of "decor." The cabin was a tapestry of fiberglass, wood, stainless steel, aluminum, and canvas. Every backing plate and fasteners for every piece of deck gear was clearly visible...and accessible. There was a grabrail everywhere you wanted one and a fiddle everywhere one was needed. The galley was laid out to produce a hot meal for hungry men in difficult conditions and not to please the owner's wife. The chart table did not look like the flight deck of a 757; it looked like a place a man could spread a chart and work out a sight. No doubt she was Abino Robin, a one tonner, but the open layout made her seem larger. For many years I thought of her as a two tonner. She was designed and built by a master, a man with thousands of sea miles under his keel.
Nicest interior I ever saw.

Yes, I saw the work you did on the van in Dumb and Dumber.
Good job.
Paul, also cheering with you tonight for Clemson, but cheering for the Panthers opponent this weekend!

Re: Tarting up the salon ceiling?
We have removed all the "headliners" in our Pearson. Vinyl glued to thin plywood or aluminum, held up with varnished teak battens. No horrible but very old. We are repairing all the leaks and then will decide what to do, for the mean time we think painting the overhead with Interlux EpoxyCoat and the Interlux Perfection Pearl White would make the overhead acceptable for a while. Our fiberglass is black/brown not real pretty but might look good painted off white. Most important thing is to get off the dock and explore new places. We are after that goal. The most dangerous thing on a boat is a schedule.

Re: Tarting up the salon ceiling?
I just the expression "tarting up". I learn so much on this forum
I painted my vintage interior (early 70's) white; all that brown gave me cabin fever, even in summer. Even the upholstery was brown - the previous owners seemed to love that color ...
Since it was only a few yrs old and in very good shape I left it on but covered it with a mattress cover

Re: Tarting up the salon ceiling?
The entire interior of this boat was finished with 1 or 1.5" yellow foam rubber covered in beige vinyl. I pulled one loose corner away from a bulkhead to see if I could find a source of a leak....
Now two years later there isn't a shred of vinyl or foam rubber. We did go with high end hull liner for the vertical surfaces, and are using a really tough Sherwin Williams paint for the overheads. I like being able to see all the hardware. I like the extra inch or so of interior room. I just ordered one of the oscillating multitools with a rasp for removing grout and hope to use that and it's sanding function to smooth out some of the more obvious fiberglass chunks. The original builder never intended for the interior glass to be seen, so it's rough in places. But two coats of good paint go a long way toward smoothing it all out. I looked at a lot of options, and just can't get into fake wood. I don't think going to all that trouble for purely cosmetic reasons makes sense for us.
Hey, if you serve drinks in a salon, does that turn it into a saloon?

No, no, NO! A thousand times, NO! It always was, is now, and forever will be a SALOON! THERE IS NO SALON ON A YACHT!
Excuse me for a moment while I put one of these tiny pills under my tongue... I'll be okay in a few minutes... I hope...

Paint it sky blue with clouds..so you still feel like you are in the cockpit while you are in there. What could be better than that? Lol.

So....if a couple of liveaboards tied up to a dock and opened up a hair styling service on their boat, they'd have to call it a Hair Saloon?
That's a pretty low overhead way to earn some cruising income....
If they gave discounts for group hair styling would that be the bulk head rate?
Man this nautical lingo is tough!

How about paint it black, with tiny stars, like a night sky. For a bit of whimsy, paint images of all your lost pets, with tiny wings on their way to heaven.
We're talking about the downstairs salon right, not the deck saloon with the swinging doors and the cowboys?
