Swan 36 1969 - Is It a Good Boat to Start With?

hi

this will be my first sail boat, i own a 33 foot power boat with 2 outboard . and considering moving to sailboat to get places where my powerboat cant reach (out of gas) mostly caribean sea islands. Can anyone give me a pros and cons list for the 1969 Swan 36
the estimated market price?
the example im considering need interior to be redone, and overhaull the engine (volvo penta) and rigging and instrument upgrade
i m considering to sail it as is and upgrade or fix as time and exedent money allow.
I have visited the internet and found a lots of information on swanassociation.org but feels not enough.

What I am looking for is more along the lines of seaworthiness, is it a familiar cruiser or a racer or both? as well as the ability to be sailed in blue (and possibly green, you never know) water and if anyone has any suggestions on upgrades or improvements.
what are the elements that are most probably deteriorated?and need to be fixed while the boat still in a dry marina.

No expert, but Swan is a very highly respected maker of high end yachts.

Given the vintage, she is probably sea kindly, and would be a good choice.


You would do well to hire a competent rig surveyor, and consider in the purchase the fact that there have been so few replies here (yes, I know that does not mean a lot... but).

She may be a FINE ship, and you will certainly have a head turner...

Its a very nice looking boat, looks like i fell in love also.
i think it will be ok for the 3 of us. (i counteed 6 person on board in the link picture.)
but is it worth the 120k? is it the real value of the boat?

the example im cosidering is a project boat and the price is way lower, but will end almost in the same price range once concluded.

i dont see a dingy, or a dingy storing space?

Its a very small boat

The Swan 36 1967 - 1970
LOA: 35.5 feet
LWL: 25.5 feet
Beam: 9.64 feet



A modern boat
LOA 36.5
LWL 31.1
Beam 12.6

And the beam in the Swan is amidships so it has a very small cockpit, and is small below. There is no chance of Nookie on board as no one can suck face on a split berth.

The kids dont have cabins, one must always sleep in the saloon. So you have to go to bed when they do.




What may look lovely to some is not everyone. And for cruising I certainly believe 'look' means nothing.

The boat below is a modern design. check the difference in accomodation.


A modern, 10 year old, 36 foot cruiser will be half the price, have vastly less maintenance, everyone will have their own cabin, the galley will be big enough and the private masters cabin will be large enough for a wild orgy.

I wasn't going to reply because I've never been aboard a Swan 36.

However, I have sailed a Swan 38 belonging to a friend. I found it to be a very fast boat, nicely laid out and beautifully crafted. We only sailed about 30 miles in her but it was early October and the weather was brisk, with decent winds. She was a treat to handle. We weren't planning on racing but ended up going neck to neck with a Hughes 38 and over took her after a short lag pursuit. This was between Port Credit and Toronto Western Gap.

I will say that at the time, I'd heard Swans described by several people as the Rolls Royce of fiberglas boats.

In answer to your second question, she is worth what the buyer will pay. Having said that maintenance to "orgy suitable" condition can be expensive.

Come on... unless you are going to take a picture of the original and have the boat yard build a new one 150k is a bit high don't you think?

Be sure to take a look at the 38. A boat like this one has had all the major refit done for you. Just the diesel and teak would be 50k worth.
