Thanks for the suggestion, Michael. This is actually the surveyor that the broker recommended. I'm tempted because he's local... Anyone else have any experience with him?

IA,
Cold molded construction certainly will affect the survey/surveyor. It is a construction process not well understood by surveyors and insurance underwriters. Suggest you go for the Oregon surveyor recommended above as she has experience with Schooner Creek boats. Travel expenses would be minimal compared to the "fix" list generated by an inexperienced surveyor.

As a couple of others have mentioned, my friend Alison Mazon AMS is a little further away but she is absolutely brilliant and highly experienced in all type of wood construction. She is also a damn fine mechanic

Re: Surveyor, Victoria, BC

Thank you so much for all your great suggestions! This forum is wonderful! I settled on going with Ken Rorison. I spoke with another surveyor, who actually was familiar with the boat and recommended Ken for it. Ken has built "a few" cold-molded boats (his words)! And said he just surveyed a 54' one today. So I'm happy with that. He's not cheap, but if I have to spend money on something, I'd rather get it done right. Now I have to sit and wait for 2 weeks for the sea trial and survey.

Alison sounds like a great surveyor too!

Re: Surveyor, Victoria, BC

So I've got Ken Rorison lined up for boat survey and Jonathan Blanchard lined up for rigging. Feeling good (although the broker has probably put in a solid hours time making sure that I'm prepared for the fact that no one wants to buy a boat after Ken has surveyed it). The Dr. Death reputation lives on.

Anyways, does anyone have suggestions for an excellent engine mechanic/surveyor to make this thread the one-stop shop for trusted Vancouver Island recommendations? The boat is actually in Nanaimo so suggestions of folks further north would be fine.

Thanks in advance.

Gartside Marine up in Sidney has a very solid reputation. Their website is down, but you can still get the phone number online. A few of my friends have used them and been happy with the results.

Thanks!

I called Gartside and unfortunately they didn't seem too interested in going up to Nanaimo. If anyone has other suggestions, I'm all ears.

Nanaimo Yacht Services might work for you. I know the owners (who also own Nanaimo Yacht Charters and Sailing School).
