Suggestions on designs that go head to weather and swell gracefully please

I am new here.

I am not wealthy.

I live near Ventura California.

Most lessons I notice we spend the whole time close hauled, and barely staying in line with the harbor entrance at channel islands.

it looks like conditions are almost always north to south swell and wind.

now I read a few threads about california coast and traveling north...

even if I go south, I still must come home.

I like alberg designs and it is what I am looking for, mostly based on seaworthyness and cost combination.

will size help?

maybe just a brute iron gennaker?

thank you!
