So if its the old fashioned type with a nut on the end.. undo the nut and slide it up the shaft out of the way.. dig out the hemp what ever packing that's inside.. you can buy a special type packing or get some hemp and grease it well wrap it round the shaft a couple or three turns and tamp it into the gap, slide the nut back down and tighten.
These will drip normally but it should only be around 2 drops a minute or so.. while running.. you may have to redo it once or twice till you figure the right amout of packing.

Re: Stuffing box

When you have acquired the proper sized packing, cut the end of the first wrap at an angle, test fit around the propeller shaft before cutting off the roll, cut the tail end at an angle to match the first cut and create an angled seamless seal. Stagger the seams in the packing gland if additional wraps are used. You don't wanna flood the boat, though. One wrap, two wraps, three wraps, how many are in there ?

Re: Stuffing box

There are instructions on packing replacement and adjustments on the net. You should google it. The process is more then just a paragraph of words, more like a couple pages. There are do's and don'ts.
