Post stopping deck leaks!!

Hi, anyone familar with the spray-on leak stopper in the tall black can? My deck leaks are getting worse and winter pullout is still a ways away. Seems like some of the leaks are coming in thru hand rails. Does spray stuff work??
Thanks, John

Re: stopping deck leaks!!

You can fix it correctly or you can use something else..........I would consider the stuff in the can something else.
Just my humble opinion.

Re: stopping deck leaks!!

The huge problem with deck leaks is the core. If it's Balsa or plywood, rot is a serious possibility and either a time consuming or expensive proposition to fix. I'd get those offending parts off ASAP, dry out the core if it's wet, seal the pukas with epoxy and reinstall. No need to haul the boat to do deck work.

Re: stopping deck leaks!!

Thank goodness I have a solid fiberglass boat with no core. Sound like a real headache.

Very few boats have solid glass decks. The oday 19 was one. A few other smaller guys. What boat do you own that has a solid glass deck?

Way off topic sorry. I see where the deck on a spencer is balsa core. Solid glass on a deck is not always a good thing. Which is why it's rarely done. Stopping fittings from leaking real big deal. Even if you have solid glass decks. I did not dig real deP but found this. DECK: The deck, cabin and cockpit are also laid-up in a one-piece female mold. Sandwich for the deck is end-grain Balsa for maximum stiffness and insulation. Use of Balsa in the deck permits ease of installation of deck hardware to suit owner requirements at the time of construction and in the future. The Spencer hull and deck are joined while the hull is still in the mold to maximize fairness. The toerail is incorporated into the deck/hull joint which is achieved by means of successive layers of internal fiberglass bonds. The non-skid deck surface is an integral part of the deck mold.from this http://old.spenceryachts.net/information.htm

Re: stopping deck leaks!!

I have owned a Com-pac 23 and currently own a Com-pac 25 (for sale BTW, will be placing it on the classifieds shortly). Solid glass on both hull and deck. I have owned other boats (Ericson, Grampian, MacGregor), all had those stupid leaks that will drive you crazy trying to find out where the water is really intruding which makes stopping the leaks even more difficult.

Com-pacs both the 23 and the 25 have been the only boats I have owned that have been completely dry, no leaks, therefore dry cushions, pillows and blankets, dry bilge. And no wood cores, so no fear of wood rot!

I am sure there are other great examples out there, but I can personally attest to Com-pac's.

Re: stopping deck leaks!!

sabray, I see where you read that on the Spencer website.
Scroll down my blog to November 3. It's not very far down.
The Rebuilding of Chasing Summer
My boat is completely solid fiberglass and this is how I'm preventing deck leaks from starting in the first place. Some have said it's way over kill, but consider the alternative of trying to stop leaks after the boat's finished and at sea in a screaming gale with driving rain. NO THANK YOU I'll gladly take the time now to back all my penetrations so really they aren't penetrations at all. I plan on doing the same with my sheet tracks as well.
Good luck stopping your leaks. I know they can be a real pain.
