Steel / Alu Pilothouse Boats ?

Does anyone know of any shipyards that make steel/alu boats with deck saloon or pilothouse? Preferably boats built in the 80-90's, or a price limit at 160k euro (210k dollars). We look at the Van de Stadt, we'ce recently discovered the Glacer boats, we drooled at the Puffin boats (haha), but can't really seem to find much out there.

Any suggestions?

P.S. We are also interested in catamarans.

Motiva yacht are steel with very beatiful inside and out. saloon and inside steering. Very high quality boats.

And there are some very nice Reinke yacht in steel and aluminum.
Its another steelboat buildt in northern europe but i forget the name, looks like a miks between nauticat and HR.

A special boat that you could give an offer on is this: I guess he could sell for a low price.....

I have seen this boat in 2007 and I was stunned. Check the spec, and its all custom made.....This is a very special boat if you take your time and look at the layout and the specs.

There are lovely alu pilothouse boats around but not many in this price limit.

But you may be lucky to find a nice one-off. Try searching French / Dutch sites. Alu / steel are very popular there. Many are very well built too.

flemmingsveen, that mix between a HR and Nauticat seems interesting. One of the boats we're seriously looking at is Nauticat 35 (the catch is that they're glassfiber). We've looked at Motiva and Reinke, I momentarily forgot that. I found an interesting reinke now. The motiva's are interesting, but the one's in our price range are so ugly (on the outside).

Oh, I forgot to add that we're really not keen on something bigger than 45 feet.

Looking at the weight of that Norman 40 and sail area. It actually compares favorably in sail area to displacement ratio when comparing to most glass prod boats. I would expect excellent sailing performance. You would need it though as it only has one 100L tank. I dont know why anyone would build out of steel and only have one plastic fuel tank when steel lends itself to making large tanks in out of the way places.

In the 90s there were some real nice steel vessels being bilt in the Vancouver BC area, I don't remember the name but Im sure there are folks on here from the area that can let ya know the name of the company bilding them> as I remember they were Pilot house ketchs altho my memory is not to clear as I never really was aboard one, just saw pics and one sailing in the Canadian waters. I know there were a few Helleman Yachts made on the 40 to 50ft range in the early 80's

My own is Helleman is 65ft but could not find smaller models for sale.

Good feature about them is that hull and superstructure was built with Corten Steel, which has great anti rust properties.

Well, if you are still looking in six or seven years, I might be persuaded to sell.



But until that point, I have a number of plans in mind...

Celestialsailor, I'm not really opposed to them as such. One point is that in a faroff dream, I'd like to cruise colder waters. Hence metal seems a good idea.
Another point is that aluminum, and to some degree steel, is a more environmental friendly material in the very long run.

But really, we might realistically end up with a glassfiber boat. As said, I really drool at the Nauticat 35.

The steelyachts that look like nauticat is Langedrag.

Just bevare of that alot of the steelboats specially the amateur buildt often have minor costructions fault that make big problems like lack of notch holes and other small important details. Some yachts I have seen sold for big money wouldnt be worth even half. But they look nice inside and out, but had serious rust in spots thats almost impossible to find before it come trough...

I will be the first to admit this about steel boats: Build quality and initial surface preparation are critical to a long-lived and durable vessel. Standing water is indeed an enemy, as is (generally) insulation carried below the waterline and ventilation. Both can create and capture condensation that eats away at the fabric of the boat out of sight.

You should learn how to spot problems by a) seeing a lot of boats, and b) paying for a survey when necessary by a surveyor expert in these materials.

Having said that, a well-built steel boat can be a pleasure to sail, is not necessarily "sluggish", and offers some real positives in my mind to fibreglass. I have a steel sailboat and a fibreglass one, and I consider both boats well suited to their different purposes.
