Spanish Furia 37 any Experience Anyone?

Hi guys,

I’m looking for feedback for my accepted offer on this 1986 Spanish Furia 37. This forum has seven members that list a Furia as their vessel but only one owns a 37 and has not yet replied to my inquiries. Perhaps most owners are Spanish speaking and not on this forum.

Anybody got specifics on the boat? I already found her on sailboatdata dot com and our Dutch organization ANWB. There is also a Club Furia dot com site for owners that has a bit of info.

Would this be a good boat to bring up to snuff and go Trans-atlantic at some point? If you like to see some pics then google for marktplaats and Furia. As a rookie I’m forbidden to post links here yet. Looks like a good deal but no repair or maintenance over €1k has been made in the last 6 years which worries me. I will let it get assessed professionally.

Cheers,
Jurgen

Hi

I can give you a forum where is a lot of owner's Furia 37, La Taberna del Puerto: Index the only problem is they speak Spanish :-(, but you write the questions and translate it with google translator, it will be drama to understand it.

Cheers.

Re: Spanish Furia 37 any Experience Anyone?

Almost any boat can be repaired and beefed up to last a transatlantic. But do you frankly believe it that it is worth the time, effort and money on a 37'er that you can buy with just 22k?

If your aim is to sail a transatlantic or more (and there are various kinds of transatlantics, with various levels of difficulty and risks associated) then why not get yourself a proper ocean going hull?

Look, I speak Spanish and I know a couple of Spanish designs. If you go for it and you badly need any text translated into English, just drop me a PM and I will try to help.

My two EUR cents of what it's worth.

Listen to everybody, then make your own decisions.

Cheers,
b.

Thanks for the pointer to the other forum and offers to translate. They speak generally positive of the boat and my test ride was positive. So might take you up on your offer to do the translation when I’m in doubt.

barnakiel can you common on why this is not a "proper ocean going hull?” With 37 it’s big enough right? Will I make it?

In my eyes, size has very little to do with being man enough.

Hull shape, and how this hull was built (materials, techniques, skills, etc.) may, and often will, vastly influence suitability.

A well attached keel, a well attached rudder, lines that promote comfort during an extended sea voyage. And the peace that comes with all the above.

I too would elect (with limits, which, in my case, would nearly definitely be lower than yours) the bigger boat. But only after all my other priorities (see the above sentence) have been met.

Do not worry with my opinion though. It is very biased as my sailing is mostly of the ocean going type. Chase YOUR dream.

Make thorough research, get a boat that fits your skill level, listen to everybody, then make your OWN decisions.

Neither I nor you can say if you "will make" it. It is all a function of your skills, your hardware and your luck. But only if you believe in luck.

Take care,
b.

Barnakiel, can you detail which of the items you named:
“”"
Hull shape, and how this hull was built (materials, techniques, skills, etc.)
“””
and
“””
A well attached keel, a well attached rudder, lines that
“””

make it anything less than a
“””
proper ocean going hull?
“””
and why so?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Spanish Furia 37 any Experience Anyone?

My question was why you would think that this Furia 37 (Cojonos) is not a good hull for ocean crossing?

I have an additional worry with this boat now that she’s on shore. The keel is not the standard draft of 6.73' / 2.05m as listed on sailboat data dot com but it is 4.92’ / 1.50m. This is much shorter as you can see on the pictures here:

More pictures and movies of the Cojones at: ododo dot nl slash dodo slash Cojones
At the risk of ridicule, I draw an ASCIII representation of the hull below.

HTML Code:
                |mast

 \ Cojones /

   -----------------------------------/
              \ / | |
               \ keel / \\
                \----/ \\

Is this smaller cast iron keel shape unsafer for use at open sea?

Hi Jurgenfd,

I really apologize for not answering you earlier, but I wasn't aware about your message.

I suppose you took a decision about the Furia 37. Anyway, if you keep interested on something about that kind of boat, please let me know.

Cheers,

Jose

(ps: I've tried to answer by private message but there were some problems to do that)

Re: Spanish Furia 37 any Experience Anyone?

I guess we are learning about our boats. I bought mine one year ago and I'm also in process of outfitting it.
The Furia 37 was one of the more prestigious Spanish sailing boats in the eighties, designed for cruising and race according to that time IOR rules. Well built (although far from the quality standards of Nordic boats like Hallberg-Rassy or similars) , fast and comfortable.
Certainly any of them will need to have been updated after 30 years. Otherwise such update will be an extra cost, although current prices help enough.
Mine was in pretty good condition, but it's been needed to change sails, repairing the anchor windlass and to do some works inside repairing and barnishing woods, apart of improving electronics and safety equipment.
There is a very good article at - Mar Abierto | La Revista de los Navegantes - of course it is in Spanish but I'd try to translate into English.
Do you live in Netherland? I sail in the Mediterranean and to this kind of sailing (here the waves are short) and usually sailing is upwind) the boat performs very well. It is fast and very stable. One thing that struck me when I saw the pictures of yours was the type of keel. I had not ever seen for this boat, so short and with that bulb. It is not the original one, is it?

It will be great to share with you our mutual experiences.

Cheers

Found this googling, must be a fast boat:
The 18 boats in Class 2 IRC handicap, which ranged from a Furia 37 down to a Folkboat, saw William Tremlett’s Furia 37 Cruella de Vil take line honours by 40
seconds from Peter and Ross Bateson’s First 31.7 Starspray.

Scuttlebutt Europe: July 14 - boats.com

You might be a little more rolly than a boat with a deeper keel, proper sail trim will help compensate.

Hi,

Private messages still are blocked to me. That's because my answer through the open forum. But if you prefer, send me your email address in a private.

The article is indeed specific for Furia 37
As you are registered, easily can download it from the section 'perlas del pantalán' at: http//www.marabierto.eu/perlas/Furia%2037

Cheers

I'm not certain, but I believe that you become a "trusted member", and send PMs, after 10 posts.
