Southerly boats

Wonder what is the forum idea of southerly yachts. Especially when
Looking at water sailing">blue water sailing.

I surveyed a Southerly 115 here in Queensland and I thought she was a nice yacht certainly plenty of yacht for the length. The only issue I found was the mast compression post had sunk about 12mm into the fiberglass base? The rest of the boat was well built.

Depends on what you are looking for - If it's a shallow draft boat that can go in and sit on the beach or pull up the board and sailing really shallow waters then , yeah it's a good boat.



If that's not what you need then there are many other boats out there and they don' come with the limitations that the Southerly has (when not used in shallow draft seas)

I happen to like swing keel boats. They have some accommodation compromises but so do many choices.



For places with drying moorings or a lot of shallow anchorages they are great, and Southerly along with Garcia are particularly good examples.

I saw one (the 49) at a boat show and it appeared to me that there is ballast of some sort outboard in the salon. That pushed the seating area inwards and it just seemed a little cramped to me. Plus it was on multiple levels with 2 or 3 steps up to the seating area which may be there due to the keel box.



Either way , for a 49 footer it was a very, very cramped living area.

I said compromises, not limitations. The big deal is the keel trunk followed by the mechanism and the maintenance. "Big deal" is not huge - they are just the largest issues. For many people those things are well worth the benefits.



For most people going to work everyday is a compromise that allows you to eat. Cost-benefit.


I love my boat but I would not hesitate to own a Southerly.

The 49 was a stretched version of the 46 designed to be a fast hull, she shows that in the accommodation I think. The 47/480 that replaced this model certainly helps improve the space. The 535/540 even more so. The steps up are essentialy there to access the raised saloon area to a height that allows for a view out of the saloon "windows" when seated, this feature also pushes the seating inwards, but there is no ballast outboard in the hulls, all ballast is in the keel mechanism. Actually now fixed keel and lower saloon versions of the boats are available, so you can pick which compromise you prefer!

Thanks. It was the 480 (recent) and I may have heard wrong on the ballast or someone who thought they knew more than I said it. Either way I am not a fan of the boat. I just found the main cabin claustrophobic and felt like the walls were pushed in. I've sailed on DS boats before but this felt cramped and old. But again, that's my opinion and others my love the design.


As for shoal draft and sticking it on a beach , I don't think there is another cruising boat that will beat it. Does exactly what it says on the tin!

Good come back B23iL23 I thought you might have bitten of more than you could chew. Don't Forget the OVNI design, just as good as the Southerly.
