Re: Some sailing... boring stuff really..

It is really hard to shoot video or still pictures that accurately show wave heights for sure.

Several years ago, I had to go out in a RIB dinghy from a 55 foot boat between Grand Cayman and Cuba, doing a pick up from an air drop. I was estimating the waves at 8 or 9 feet, and breaking over the dinghy at times, and we were just getting the hell beat out of us. When we pulled up to the big boat, we would be at the keel one moment and at the railing the next, trying to unload the the dinghy and board and get the RIB back up on deck. I was so exhausted when I got back on deck and done I just collapsed.

Someone on the big boat was filming the whole thing and I couldn't wait to see it. Later, I watched it and looked like we were barely moving and the seas didn't really look like anything more than a couple of feet high chop. I didn't even ask for a copy.

Hi, Group 9,

I suspect that the camera "eye" needed to be in the dinghy with you, looking up past you at the waves, to get the scale, and the human expressions that would tell the viewer something. Now, unless you had a waterproof camera, that's pretty unlikely, eh? You did well to get back aboard and live to tell the tale. Too bad about the pix, though.

Confusing the winch with the sunglasses again, I see. Ow. Nice videos, though. The second one looked like 9 knots of boatspeed in 24 knots of apparent wind. Do I win?
