Some of the smallest boats to cross The Atlantic.

Was surfing YouTube and came across this video about some incredibly small monohull boats that actually crossed The Atlantic and was amazed. Thinking about making my own attempt now!

Yep, those always are interesting reading... I don't think in my wildest I ever thought about that small size, not interesting in setting records (which almost requires it), but I very much enjoyed the surprisingly seaman like circumnavigation of Serge Testa (see Amazon); or Sebastian Naslund's transatlantic (see YouTube). Both of these were less radical, but clearly challenging nonetheless.

Have done, compared to Father’s Day it is twice the size but any boat that small to cross The Atlantic is amazing.

Me neither, I would prefer doing it in more comfort and with better food. Will look up Naslunds voyage. I do love reading these seafaring stories. The guts and perseverance these guys have is really motivational.

These guys had to have balls so big they must of used them as a sea anchor in foul weather.

Re: Some of the smallest boats to cross The Atlantic.

Hugo Valen lived next door to a friend of mine in Homestead Florida. I got to meet him about 25 years ago. I also got a tour of his first crossing boat, April Fool. It was in his back yard.

He seemed pretty normal, not at all crazy. The boat tour didn't take very long. How long can it take to look at a six foot boat?

He had right up until I read "There is no autopilot or wind vane self-steering".

Re: Some of the smallest boats to cross The Atlantic.

When I was a kid I read a book, I read a book about someone who crossed the Atlantic in something like a 10ft boat perhaps in the 60's or 70s.

It was the shortest boat to cross at the time. I remember he took cans and varnished them to prevent rust, but then couldn't tell the difference between the main meals and desert. I felt really sorry for him about that. He had to take distilled water for irons to prevent it from getting algae. And at one time a tanker almost ran him down but for turning his dim cabin light in for 10 seconds which allowed them to spot him. That's about all I remember.

Would anyone know the book/author?

This boat was a lot more portly - custom made, not a day sailer and designed for the open seas.

An article on his upcoming attempt was actually what got me reading up on the subject.
