Since I retired a month ago I've been looking at boats. I want to liveaboard but primarily do a bunch of cruising. I've been trying to be as rational as possible and have been looking at Tartan 37's, Pearson 365's, Alberg 37's, Mariner 36's and a few others. I even looked at a Beneteau First 35. My realistic budget including some refitting is around $50,000.

I've just come between the Devil and the deep blue sea. My lifelong hobby has been woodworking and my vocation is in the electronics/electrician field. With all my logic everything says keep it simple, stupid but I just ran across a boat that just absolutely does it for me.

Some boats have great accommodations, some look OK, some are just too sanitary and have no character but the prettiest boat that I've ever seen is now at the top of my list. If sailing is a romantic pursuit then I've finally found my Marilyn Monroe. Do any of you own or have any information about a Cheoy Lee Robb 35.5. The proportions are perfect in my opinion and it may well be the prettiest 35 foot boat in the world.

I really want it because it's so sexy.....just like me.

but is it a problem? Oh, did I mention that I really like it?

Lots of work to do on these things. I enjoy that but some folks don't. You have to factor that in. K40's and larger are also wonderful.

Any boat you buy will require more time, effort and money than you expect to keep her ship shape. Due to this, it only makes sense to buy the boat you LOVE.

Looks like a Cheoy Lee 40. Nice design, but more or less a "couples" boat given those overhangs. Not a bad thing in a way, because there's no room to put in too many "conveniences".

Here's the link to the listing. Does anything look wrong or worrisome? Oh, did I mention that I really like it. I guess from the definition that I read it would in fact be a yawl, y'all. Mizzen aft of the rudder post. Is that the only criteria? If they moved the mizzen forward 3' would it then be a ketch or is something else like sail area involved?

I'm prepared to leave tomorrow from Kentucky to see this boat. Someone talk me out of it..........please. It's not a wooden boat but the masts are. Is there any problem with strength vs. aluminum or is it a non-issue if they're in good shape? It only has to be a couples boat if I get lucky. My girlfriend of 20 years said that if I expect her to live on a boat she'll leave me. She left three days ago and I'll sure miss her.

The overhangs are what give that boat character and I'll take a little less room for the look. Heck, I have some older Corvettes and they have useless ovehangs also but they're still fun.

Shouldn't be any more work than any other fiberglass boat of that age. Boat looks well
maintained, but that can be deceiving.

As for a yawl or a ketch, I'm going by two things, the mizzen is barely taller than the spreaders of the main, and Cheoy Lee calls it a yawl.

Most boats are designed around the same "target market" being husband, wife and kids doing short coastal sailing. Just to turn a boat into a liveaboard takes alot of modification, for extended crusiing even more. Some boats may cost $1000 less because they need $5000 worth of work and some might cost $5000 less because they need $1000 work (or just because someone wants to get rid of it). With the economy the way ity is, the cost of available boats does not match and varies wildy from the "accepted value".
