Re: Snapped Rudder

Fiftybucks,

Sorry for the accident. Suggest you telephone nearest Catalina dealer relative to replacement, and also possible collateral damage done by the tow that snapped the rudder. Hopefully no internal damage.

Ann

Re: Snapped Rudder

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Looks like about 2800 USD plus 100 shipping from Catalina Direct. No firsthand experience as my boats are smaller. May want to confirm with them and/or dealer before committing.

PS Watching for leaks?

Re: Snapped Rudder

Just curious: is this one of the Catalina shoal draft models where the draft of the rudder is equal (about) to the keel?

I've seen such designs on the hard and worried about just the kind of event you describe.

And condolences for a sad maiden cruise... hang in there, it will get better!

Re: Snapped Rudder

Thx all. Getting towed to yard noon today.
Spent last night worried. And in downtown staging transient slip.
What is the name for damage that occurs after tow US strarted pulling us in reverse. Something like collateral damage.
It isis a 4.5 draft.

Don’t want to derail this thread but let me address this design flaw. My boat rudder IS the same depth as the shoal keel. In a hard grounding the keel lost a small chunk of lead. The bottom of the rudder was all smashed up. No other damage, that was as 20 years ago and I still have the boat. But I will not buy anything that suffers this poor design.

Re: Snapped Rudder

@Fiftybucks,

Apologies if I didn't write clearly. "Collateral damage" is merely unintended damage: it won't be specific till you see what it is. I meant that you should consider the possibility of additional damage from the grounding, that might have occurred while they were pulling on the boat.

Re: Snapped Rudder

By the time the rudder has snapped you'll be very lucky if there isn't significant damage to where the rudder is mounted. $2800 is going to be the budget just for looking, I'd guess.

Re: Snapped Rudder

As a Catalina owner I think it's very silly of them to have the rudder approx the same length as the keel (Shallow draft). They have large spades ,and when loaded up the stern can sit down a little lower making it worse.

I know of at least two C470 owners that have shortened their rudders for this reason with no noticable difference to performance, maybe worth looking at.

I dont know about the 35 ,but in regards to damaging the hull due to rudder impact I wouldnt be concerned if its built similar to the way 470 , it's quite strong.

Also once again not sure about the 35 but the C470 rudder is designed to break the bottom 3rd off in a heavy impact thus saving any structural issues and still leaving you with a rudder that will function, maybe it's only the bottom 3rd of yours that's broken off?

Re: Snapped Rudder

I now may agree with poor design argument. Boat will be out of water in 1 hr and I will load pics.
Just so all know I am at fault for not making g absolutely sure that raymarine e80 was relieving data. Add an iPhone and iPad all with different map symbols and no depth or really chart n e80 I just chose wrong alignment. Again it was me accidentally missing which chart plotter was set as master. End result poor info and poor decision.

Also when you have to have the info you have to have it now. Not configuring wifi connection.

Re: Snapped Rudder

rudder is not fixable... getting parts and labor estimate..and how long to fix
all the components inside are damaged, bearings ...... autopilot ect..
boat yard has seen before

as to location... the bar was at the mouth of big pass south of sarasota. we meant to take longboat, but the raymarine did NOT HAVE THE DATA displayed as i had wrong unit assigned as master.... try it you will see. My fault for not learning the specific navigation settings on this boat.... turn both off... turn on downstairs... boot... then helm boot assign master oh the no data warning
