Two of your criteria are quantifiable and measurable: cost ($) and speed (knots). But "seaworthy" is a pretty vague and subjective concept. One way to look at it, if a vessel successfully completes a passage, it has been "seaworthy". By that criterion, a Hobie Cat, a surfboard, a kayak, a bathtub, and Queen Mary II are all seaworthy! Seaworthy is all about the specific voyage and the risk you are willing to accept. So I think your question is meaningless. You should think about what you really want and try asking the question again.

Canoes have taken man across the pacific, and to New Zealand... A kayak rigged for sail will fly along. My old paper tiger (14&rdquo loved a stiff breeze and I clocked her at just shy of 30 knots once.

and with a little (ok, a LOT) of work, it'll be seaworthy.

I am in the 2 outta 3 club......

...and would settle on $4k and as close to being seaworthy as you can find. As likely going to be smallish then fast a relative term anyway, might get something a bit faster than others over shorter distances but for a long plod will all be much the same. My gut says sub 27 foot and likely nearer 23 (to get something which does not need $20k+ in cash and time to even get accross the bay).

Also very much depends on what you want to do with the boat - sail RTW? accross the bay? tie to the dock? and where (sun, snow, wind or rain? ).

On exact make and model will be pot luck on what is available at the time, if you hold out for something specific turning up in your locale odds on you will be 110 by the time it does. or older .

You might be able to find a Santa Cruz 27 for about that kind of money, but it'll need some work. Pretty fast, esp. off the wind, and people have raced them in the Transpac. (I wouldn't, but hey...)

You can find good strong seaworthy boats for $2,000 - $4,000. I bought mine for $2,000 but probably have $6,000 plus in it now because I was experimenting. If money was tight I could have had it ready for around $4,000. Plus I bought a new main sail. ($1500) The boat came with 5 anchors. The CQR in the picture and a big Bruce plus an assortment of danforths. An almost new 135 jib and 100 jib, auto pilot, gps (2), depth, chart plotter.

As for as speed, that has a lot to do with the sailor. Now I know where a Peterson 34 is phrf 117. I could never hang with him even if he was clueless unless things were light and flukey. My phrf is 240-250.

I also didn't go crazy on cosmetics. I painted the bottom. Went thru a couple engines but should have gone directly to an outboard. I have now closed all seacocks.

I actually just rolled over a guy on a newer model sailboat with long water line and open stair stern maybe 28' or 29'. He did everything he could to block me but to no avail. He had a small jib up also. Probably 100%. His boat though probably weighed 2000 lbs less than mine.

Btw, I'm talking sailing not entertaining or trying to impress with wine and cheese............

This is kinda a fun thought question. What about a beat up J-24? Raced in these things, they are very strong. A tired one sells for about $4K. Very fast, balanced rudder- tiller system. Closed (and short) cabin....
I wouldn't do it, but I bet it could be made seaworthy for not much....

I always thought my old folk boat was fast! but then Im easy to please! but she made some great days on some of my early trips ! 18 days to Hawyee LOL not bad for a out board boat ! and theres some glass ones out there along with the old wood ones like I had ! Just a thought, cus they can be gotten cheap !!

I second the Albin Vega with an outboard. I paid less than 5k for mine with new rigging (standing and running) and sails and a two year old 9hp outboard. Looking at a bigger boat now as I have kids and a wife and we are heading south in a few months, but would feel good going just about anywhere in my Vega.
