Small Family Cruiser Sugestions
Looking into getting my first cruiser to take the family out possibly long term. I am looking for a boat either new or used, but i am looking for something with the option of bunks is the forward v berth like the southerly. Or maybe bunks in of of the aft cabins for those boats that have 2 aft cabins. Anyone seen any manufacturers doing this lately? thanks for the help.

What size boat and what cruising grounds? Something with not a lot of draft for the Bahamas? What budget range?

He he he. Small cruising boat, 35-42'. I guess that's the reality of 2015.
Yes, many manufacturers make family cruising boats starting at around 35' with 2 aft cabins and a forward cabin- check hunter and beneteau, you can get a nearly new one in your price range with the configuration you want.
You could even get into a smaller cat like a Gemini for that kind of money.

Ya most of my offshore time has been spent on sport fishers so my understanding of size is a little misconstrued. However neither of the brands you mentioned have bunks in any of the cabins. that is my main want so that kids will not have to share a bed. That never works out well for us.

After reading post #3, I figured jdag used 'small' to describe his family.

I don't think I've seen much in the way of bunks on sailboats. You have a healthy budget, so maybe buy something and hire a carpenter to build bunks into the vbirth, keep the aft cabin for the adults?

Re: Small Family Cruiser Sugestions
How big is your family? There are a few boats where one of the aft cabins has two berths which can be joined to make one king (The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Bavaria Vision line, which aren't available used, yet). Others could be modified to make two sleeping tubes (most fore/aft aligned king sized). Any wide angled V berth could also be modified to make sleeping tube type berths.

Okay, back again (had some work to do). I do remember at least a couple of some pretty old designs that have bunk beds (more a tiered layer). Now, let me go play on yachtworld and see if I can have my memory helped which makes and models had this.

Re: Small Family Cruiser Sugestions
Crappy connection today so I can't open website with pics. If memory serves, the Catalina 42 has a v-berth, two aft cabins, and a forward port side cabin that has two berths, one above the other. For some reason or other, I think one of the Morgans (38 feet) has something similar.

The Catalina 42 came with a couple of options, including two vs. three cabin and for the forward section, a pullman berth just forward of the salon with the head at the point end OR a more traditional V berth with the head further aft.
