Re: Sheel Keel

just on the subject...Pete and Annie Hill changed out their original keel for a scheel keel and were very happy. Their boat, Badger, is a big junk rigged dory. Interesting to see an actual picture, not exactly how I imagined it to look.

Re: Sheel Keel

Here is a poorly scanned image of Badger's keel from Annie Hill's book Voyaging on a Small Income. Her description of it is a "Warwick Collin Tandem Keel". To me it looks quite a bit different than a Scheel Keel.

Re: Sheel Keel

I have a Tartan 33 with a Scheel keel and love it. But it is a compromise!

Everything I have read is that "nothing beats draft when going to windward". Stated differently you want a deep keel fo good windward performance. I decided against a deep fin because I sail in SFL and to a lesser extent the Bahamas.

This left me with the choice of a CB or the Scheel keel. While a centerboard would give the draft, it added complexity. One more thing to break on an older boat. So I went Scheel.

Another "pick your poison" decision in boat buying

Answering my own question, I bought a 43 Swan with a Scheel keel. It has the Scheel plaque at the nav station.
