Shallow Draft Cutter Wanted

Hi,

Having finished the circumnavigation, at 63, I am thinking of sailing in the Chesapeake,
Florida Bay, and the Bahamas.

While Pegasus is a great boat, at 45 ft and 25 tons she is getting to be much to handle.

So, she is for sale. for particulars go to www. oceanvoyaging.org.

I like Dick Zaal's Lapwing design... 2 ft draft, centerboard flip up rudder... and
long ago, in Annapolis, I saw a 36 ft or so cutter, designed there with 3 ft draft, dinghy chocks. all in all, a very sensible boat.

Am looking for such a boat.. Ideas welcome..

Attached are sketches of Lapwing... ala INDY

Indy,

Check out the Krogan 38. It is cutter rigged, draws 3 feet with the boards up, is well built and is very spacious. If you are interested I may know where there is one for sale.

Cheers,

Sir,

interesting website. I don't seem to be able to see anywhere on the site that says "boat for sale" That is what your potential buyers will be looking for!

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion on the Krogen 38.. I'd forgotten about that one...

The website is not keyed to selling Pegasus.. it does tell about our Institute and what it does..

A Kadey Krogen 38 would be a nice gunkholer. Be careful though because they come in fixed keel versions of 5' draft along with the 3'3"/6'8" tadem centerboard design that AnsleyS mentions. They have unique features like an athwartship pilot berth aft and flush deck. Jim Krogen designed her for himself and owned one.

Around South Florida and the Bahamas, we usually put shoal draft at less than 6'. With less than 5' draft, you can go pretty much anywhere, so I am not sure if you need to limit yourself to 3' draft. I would expect you will take too much a hit in performance for a 36' cutter with such little draft. More commonly, you are looking at something like the 4'6" draft of a Caliber 35. You could go real small like a 24' Sea Forth with a draft of 2'6".

It is hard to recommend designs without more specifics about what you are looking for.

A shoal Draft gunkholer is what I want

My current ship has 4.5 ft of draft... she has tandem centerboards...

Lapwing tacks through 80 degrees.... has 3 ft of draft... in the version
I asked Dick Zaal for.... She displaces 10 tons...

I am specifically thinking that my next cruising will be Florida Bay,,, Pine Island Sound
the Chesapeake, Bahama Banks... etc... because I am getting on...

I like classic boats... look at the photos... all classic...
