Scuttle your own boat in Great lakes

Can anyone shed light on the following scenario??

all environmental problems have already been removed. there is no motor, no fuel tank , no holding tank.

you sail to a very deep part of a great lake, open the seacocks, hop in your dinghy and motor back to shore as you watch the mast go under.

what laws have you broken?

Re: Scuttle your own boat in Great lakes

here in the uk that would be "fly tipping" or dumping

you might also get fined by these guys
https://www.gov.uk/report-wreck-material

Report wreck material
Report wreck material, eg parts of a ship or its cargo, to the Receiver of Wreck. You must report any material you recover within 28 days, or you could be fined £2,500.

Reporting wreck material gives the legal owner the opportunity to have their property returned.

How to report wreck material
Send the ‘Report of wreck and salvage’ form to the Receiver of the Wreck (the address is on the form).

You can also get a copy of the form from your the receiver or your local coastguard.

Receiver of Wreck row@mcga.gov.uk
02380 329 474
Find out about call charges

What counts as wreck material
Wreck material includes things found on the sea shore or in tidal water that have come from a ship, aircraft or hovercraft (vessels). This could be parts of the vessel, its cargo or equipment.

There are 4 main categories:

flotsam - goods that have remained afloat after being lost from a ship that has sunk
jetsam - things that have been cast overboard from a ship that was in danger of sinking
derelict - property that has been abandoned at sea without hope of recovering it, which could be vessels or cargo
lagan - goods that have been buoyed (so they can be recovered) before being cast overboard from a ship that then sinks
Wreck material doesn’t normally include:

boats that have come off their moorings
buoys, like marker or mooring buoys
It does include buoys that form part of fishing equipment.

The Great Lakes is a zero discharge zone. I'm sure this would be considered a major discharge.

That said, you could probably get away with it on Lake Superior, perhaps Huron. There'd be too much traffic elsewhere.

Re: Scuttle your own boat in Great lakes

I don't plan on doing it but with the number of free boats in the local papers, (free if you remove type of deal) I can see it being a plan of others. If they haven't been doing it all along.

A lot of these free deals have boats that are still well equipped with working diesels, transmissions, anchors, windlass, winches, gimbal stoves, bronze portholes, props, the list goes on. On a Hughes in the local buy and sell there was perhaps $3-4k worth of gear that could be stripped out. Balance that against the disposal fee at the local dump and it could be a zero sum game.

The problem is, of course, disposing of the hull after everything of value has been stripped off.

Hello lake....

They would arrest you--if they found out. It's funny/weird some people in Florida tell you to do that and illegal. Coast Guard does it in official capacity to make fishing reefs.
And $$thousands of dollars of fines.

A number if years a go I stripped a Merit 25 down to nothing and then took it to the dump. Cost me $28. Don't know why more people don't do that.

Re: Scuttle your own boat in Great lakes

In the USA, the Coast Guard does nothing unless the boat is a hazard to navigation. On the other hand, municipalities and other governmental jurisdictions will come after owners to make them remove the boat. Abandoned and sunk boats are a huge problem in our area, and local authorities are often stuck with substantial removal costs, so they do go after owners if they can be identified. Striking off or defacing a HIN is probably an additional charge if caught. Most taxing agencies will not let you go until you have informed them in writing of your disposition of the boat--and that is writing under penalty of perjury. Having been stuck with whopping bills to remove wrecks, towns around here will make an example of you if they can trace ownership.

Imagine sinking a keel into concrete up to the marked waterline and turning the boat into a "pirate ship", at a playground ... fiberglass lasts forever(?).

or as a science project for breeding mosquito larvae when the hull fills up with water

A little ... very little imagination would very easily resolve that issue ... that's why holes were invented ....

Hello lake....
So… you're musing about using the public waters as your own personal garbage dump just so you can maximize your profits from this salvaging idea. Seems pretty offensive, even as a thought experiment.

Of course, industry does this everywhere, so perhaps it’s not such an unusual idea .
