San Juan 21, what to look for in purchase

Hi all. I am going to look at a sj21 and I was looking for any input on what to look for. I have been reading up on common problems and I am aware of the keel tab issues and looking for the soft spots in the deck.

The boat itself is pretty much a blank canvas inside. It is a 1974 mk1. The one thing I did notice from the pics is there was some standing water inside under the cockpit area. Should I be worried about stringer rot on these?

As far as skill sets go I can fix about anything so working on it doesn't bother me I just am worried about big fix items.

Any advice would be great. Thanks

De lamination and core rot are a big deal. I purchased my SJ 21up there. I was looking at a sj21 in Marysville and another a bit farther north. Swing keel mech needs to be solid.

One was on the market for 1800 in Marysville, and the one farther north was 2500.

We're picking our sj21 Feb, 5th in Jantzen beach, from the owner. Got,a bit of a lam problem few hours with a grinder and some finerglass.

Good luck, fun fun boats.

Standing water inside the boat: how did it get in? If it came in through leaky fittings, that is how deck rot usually starts.

Through cracks around the keel? Could be a few thousand $ in fiberglass repairs.

Through a poorly maintained stuffing box? 100 bucks for a new box and you're set.

Repairing rotten stringers isn't that hard if you're handy. I would rather do that than fix deck delamination any day.

It was coming in through a crappy hatch cover. Doesn't matter though, the gentleman who owned it was a little out of touch with reality when air came to the price of the boat. I took a pass and didn't even make an offer.
