San Francisco Bird Boats

During a visit of a Pt. Richmond (CA) boatyard where my boat is being repaired, I noticed two wooden boats of the Bird class being rebuilt, one starting from the keel up. It's good to know this 90-year-old design is still in substantial use in the Bay for which the boat was specifically designed.

Great to see! In 91 I almost purchased Lark. I came to my senses at the last minute. I don't regret it, I wasn't ready for a classic woody yet.

I see fewer but they are still around. Nice little boats.

I haul out there as well. I recognize the inside of the building.

"Nothing sails like a Bird!" My stepfather raced on them. I got close myself but saw that while I could buy it I couldn't afford it. Worth saving always. Diane Beestons Of Wind, Fog and Sail has some wonderful pics of Birds in action. You can crew on one I believe. Just contact the Bird Association. Wet and exciting! You will be out there after everyone else has gone home!
A very strong assocoation. Someone once bought a Bird off E-bay and took it up to Seattle. The Association struggled for awhile and finally got it back. A lot of stress on owner responsibility for preservation and use.
