I want a big, cheap old boat, too--and am wondering what I should be looking for. My wife and I, and her 14-year-old daughter, expect to become liveaboards in Boston in the next six months. The only boats I've seen that seem to afford a berth where my wife and I can sleep touching each other and sufficient privacy for both us and child are center cockpit models. I did see the listing for that Marine Trading 41 ketch that someone mentioned upstream and it seemed just about ideal for our needs (including price--$35K is the very top edge of what we can spend.) Are there other models besides the abundant Morgan 41 Out Island that I should be considering?

Check that Formosa in NYC for 30k i put out also. I've gotten some details from the owner and if what he's claiming is all thats wrong with her(minor portlight leakage, topside teak work, and a bit of cleanup) it's a good deal. Also, more pix came with the email.

Also, there's a Gulfstar 41 in Texas for 22k but she's gonna need some serious bottom work; blisters.

This one needs some upgrades and new decor..

Check yachtworld.com. Remember though, you get what you pay for! Most sizable boats at that price point are gonna need work. Better an ugly boat you can redecorate to suit than a pretty boat with serious functional deficiencies; ie bad hull, soft decks, etc. For example:

Needs some redecorating and cleanup.

Another Boat to consider

Try looking for an Irwin 37 CC or 38 CC. They are a lot of boat for the money. I saw one in New York in a warehouse with new engine and pretty much all the topsides ready to splash. All you would need to do is finish the inside paint and replace the cushions. I've seen these starting in the low 20s and up to 56K. Most are in the 30-35K range.

I have one and they sail and motor well but most important they have really good layout for live abord. Both fore and aft cabins and 2 heads.

Just another boat to consider.
