Re: Sailing the San Juans

Hi
I live on San Juan Island, have for 26 years. What you want for the current is a booklet called Washburns. The book itself is about $20. than you need another smaller yearly book that cost around $6.. The large book is page after page of currents, their direction and velocity. The smaller book you look up the date and the hour and it gives you the corresponding page to see what is happening right now. It is what all sailors use when sailing the san juans.

Re: Sailing the San Juans

I always focus on current direction in step with wind direction. Crossing the Straits for example can be comfortable when the current and the wind are strolling together hand in hand but when in different direction can create a nightmare. This is magnified when crossing eddies such as Point Wilson. A preflight and doing the math is prudent seamanship. Good sailing..........G
