Personally I wouldn't do it and particularly not in winter.

I've sailed to Refuge cove probably 20 times on a 26 footer and that can be bad enough. FYI - There is limited Telstra mobile coverage at Refuge Cove. You may or may not be able to get it when you're there. I've had it standing in the middle of the beach and also close to the western end. Someone next to me on the same network couldn't get it.

People tow caravans onto the Spirit of Tasmania regularly - sure they cost a bit as they are not subsidized by the Government, but the time and cost for this sailing trip could quickly start to add up, particularly on a *new* unknown boat. I guess it depends on the availability of a trailer. I don't think you could put it on an empty semi-trailer backload or anything as it would be too high for the Spirit.

Hmmm, well I kind of concur with his sentiment. The distance really depends on where in Tasmania he's leaving from. But, he's right I think. There's quite a bit of scaremongering going on. If his Top Hat has a motor then he can easily get skip across. The longest route is Tamar to Flinders, but even that is only a 30 to 40 hour hop.

Hmm.. there are a lot of "ifs" in there, RC, and some that you left out as well, involving location, equipment, schedule, etc.

And do harken back a few weeks to where you were being pretty nervous about the trip across to Melbourne yourself... and that with 4 years and several thousand miles experience with your (much bigger) boat.

Sometimes scaremongering is a good practice!

I'm not making any assumptions though Jim. I'm responding only on what he asked without 'adding' 'ifs' in. Though I did emphasise in my first post to him about standard of the vessel and safety equipment.

And I was not nervous about the trip 'across', I've done that a couple of times now. I was nervous about Port Philip Heads, which is why the thread was 'crossing the rip into Port Philip bay'.

I just think the Strait is more notorious than it really is.

Though I accept your point that his Top Hat is much smaller. Which I have no experience in.

In my honest opinion, I wouldn't if I was fairly new to ocean sailing and skippering. The weather can change quickly and dramatically around the straight as some of you know. I've known some who have done this in smaller boats of the size that you are purchasing and have been caught out and regretted it.

Do you know anyone with an Etchell trailer? I've seen various types of boats put on an Etchell trailer braced and chocked with tyres to suit. The spirit is expensive and you would need a crane...another expense.

Sure there's nothing of that size locally? S80's aren't a bad option and there's a few for sale.
