Saildrive issue

Being in New Jersey with a saildrive on our Bavaria 42C is quite a challenge to find a technician to verify our transmission, at low rev 1200 rpm, we have a glassy sound from the transmission. I changed the oil in the fall, but to be secure we are looking for a saildrive tech around Sandy Hook before we launch next month, any feedback will be appreciated.

From boat owners that i visited the boat:

at 500-700 hour engine all the saildrive gearing rebuild because no moving until 1200-1500 rpm, then it engage. all gearing in the leg looked like the tooth has been sanded. (maybe your case? 55 hp 4 cylinder engine?)

A boat that is less than 15 years old (last 2 on the hard) with all the exhaust -heat exchanger broken apart....(no ice doesn't matter, it was drained....)

Many french people-boat owner that as soon as i say volvo and saildrive it was like naming the devil.

A 3d that i opened here

Saildrive VS Direct Shaft

Some people are happy with it others no...

Just my 2 cents...

Re: Saildrive issue

Thank you Stefano for your input, greatly appreciated, we are moving even at very low rpm, the noise comes up when we reach 12-1300 rpm then goes away over 1500. We just bought Aloha last fall so everything is new to us. Looking forward to go sailing instead of having to worry about the iron jib. :

No Volvo techs in the NJ/NY area? Thats surprising. Have you contacted Volvo distributors in region?

In our Marina in Atlantic Highlands, over 150 sailboats and we are the only one so far with a saildrive. A lot of Volvo tech but none with exposure to saildrive. We found one more that should return my call next week.

Anecdotally (no hard data), I hear of more issues with the Yanmar SDs. The Volvo SDs in my experience are quite reliable.

Re: Saildrive issue

"glassy sound".. Can you be more specific.. A weird sound at low revs could be a worn damper plate. They are a common item for replacement (usually around 1200-2000 hours). Unfortunately they cost about $700..
