It can be difficult to judge vertical heights looking from below. My guest "freaked" when she thought our mast would strike the bridge.

I was a bit nervous even though I knew there was no problem. It really is impossible to judge.

However seeing the bridge lowering should be a hint to not try it

The only thing worse is trying to judge the height of power lines. I captain a 65' sailboat with a mast that is 78' from the water and it freaks me out every time I go under power lines. Bridges are pretty stable but power lines can sag and it always looks like we are going to hit when going under lol

My first time under a bridge was a very anxious moment even though I knew from the charts I had clearance. Everyone else on board was nervous too.

I just wonder what would have happened if he had actually gotten under the bridge and had it push down on top of the mast.

Hahaha. Love this comment. My sail instructor used to tell me stay far far away from those MDR boats with their fenders out... Apparently the folks in Norway should be advised to do the same.
