Sailboat Props

I have a 32' Hunter Vision with a 30HP Yanmar and a 2 blade prop. What options do I have for more speed via prop changes?

Wider blades, more blades, but more drag, slower sailing.
Or go for the Max Props or folding props but that could run you $3k+.
Lots of used props for sale on eBay.
I had a big fat 3 bladed prop on my sailboat and calculated that it cost me 1/2 knot speed under sail compared to one of the fancy foldable props.

Re: Sailboat Props

What speed are you getting? A new prop wont give you more than "hull speed". But may give you much better reverse/control. So it depends on if you are currently pitched properly.

Re: Sailboat Props

What is your current speed under motor?
What size is your current prop (diameter and pitch)?

More speed under motor or more speed under sail?
Without spending money on folding/feathering props, there is a trade-off between the two.

Re: Sailboat Props

First step is find out if the current prop is the correct size. What speed can you make at what RPM? What is the diameter and pitch? What is the gear ratio of the transmission in forward?

Re: Sailboat Props

Lots of variables here, but for comparison I have a 31' Beneteau displacing about 7500 lbs that cruises at 6.25 kts at 2600 RPM (80%) with an 18HP Volvo using a Flex-O-Fold. So I cruise at about 86% of my 7.2 kt. hull speed. The Flex-O-Fold was around $600.00 and a fraction of the cost of most alternatives despite the obvious quality, and was one of the best value investments I have made on a boat I have owned since 1993. We experience higher speeds under both power and sail than the original fixed 2-blade prop, without loss of performance in reverse responsiveness. Maybe a touch more prop walk.

What- 10 years ago? They start at more than twice that now, for a 2-blade folder. A 3-blade Flex-O-Fold will run you well over $3000.
