2 Headsails, 1 Main...... spare headsail in locker

Two mains,one is full batton...three foresails, a 135 tri,radial, a 150 for lite air, and à 100% working-class jib...three staysails, a small blade, a working sail, and a 10oz storm staysail of white and orange...three kites, one symatrical with broad sholders, a 180 cruising schute, and a new addition of à cruising lite to fly from our staysail..
All sails are stores in our quarter berth....

Our newest cruising kite is small to fly from the staysail, and at this point is just a wishfull idea... Thinking it will be à good sail to fly at night in questionable conditions.. weve only Tried it in test ...

A furling main, a 110% lapper, an 85% yankee, and a #3 gennaker. I'm rigged to use the two headsails as a twizzle.

Main, staysail, yankee, and drifter. The latter two are hanked and go on the furlerless outer forestay.

Hanks + wires = much more flexibility.

And I have a new (to me) genoa that's stowed up in the air too.

I cut up my old one for use around the boat... Wrapping dead bodies etc.

Roller Furled main, Roller furled 150% Genny..... Leave everything else on shore. There is not enough difference in performance to justify the cubic feet inside the boat!

One mainsail and one 130% genoa. A staysail and storm jib stowed up in the bow. Had a cruising spinnaker, but it went home to be stored in the garage.

I carried some extra sailcloth and a sewing machine, but seldom had to use them, and only for minor repairs like restitching the sun cover.

2 mains, 2 yankees, 2 jibs, a storm jib, and 2 spinnakers, one light & one heavy.
I think we should get rid of some of them but I can't decide which. We have a Sailrite sewing machine and we can fix them.

awesome. Thanks for replies. Reason I ask is because I'm getting new sails!!!! Very excited and cant warrant carrying the old ones as I don't have a giant boat on the inside. Was going to carry a minimal inventory, but wondered what others carried. Did not see to much a reason to carry to many.

We currenly spend about 50% of our time in cruising mode and 50% in racing mode... this makes for a large sail wardrobe and many possibilities for sails actually carried.
When we are cruising we (generally) carry
1. Cruising mainsail
2. 130% genoa (i.e. #2 genoa) on a roller furler
3. Heavy weather jib (i.e. #4 jib)
4. Storm jib

We leave the racing sails at home when we cruise.

We spend all our boat time cruising.

1 Mainsail, 3 reefs
1 genoa, 120%, on a furler
1 staysail, about a #4, also on a furller
1 old style tri-radial spinnaker*

And there's some consideration of providing the boat with a code-zero, as well. We do not have a storm jib, per se, but since the staysail is on a furler, it is intended to do the job of a storm jib as well.

* We do NOT use this for racing, but there are times in very light airs when it makes the difference between ghosting along at 2 or 2-1/2 knots and doing 6. We use it very conservatively, and I love it! (see it deployed as Jim's avatar)

Our Caliber 40 has a lot of storage and I am an ex-racer so I overdid our sail inventory:

We used to also carry a lighter 135% genoa but sold it to a boat that lost their genoa when it unfurled in a hurricane and tore itself apart. We were many hundreds of miles from the closest marina and they needed a sail. I regret parting with it - there are many times I wish I had something heavier than the 2.5 oz drifter and lighter than the 7.5 oz Spectra 120% genoa.

We've sailed our Caliber 40 from Seattle to San Diego twice and San Diego to Cabo San Lucas once
- 50% of the time we have a mainsail and poled out drifter up
- 10% of the time we have a mainsail and Spinnaker
- 20% of the time we have a reefed mainsail and poled out genoa
- 20% of the time we have a reefed mainsail and reefed genoa

We then spent three years cruising back and forth from the north Sea of Cortez to Zihuatenejo
- 60% of the time we have a mainsail and drifter up
- 20% of the time we have a mainsail and Spinnaker
- 15% of the time we have a reefed mainsail and genoa
- 5% of the time we have a reefed mainsail and reefed genoa

We have not had to use the staysails or trysail in the last 13 years of cruising.

We sail downwind whenever possible! We change our destination if it is upwind. We don't really care where we end up at the end of trip - we do care that we don't sail uphill! In 5 years and 6,000 miles from Seattle to Zihuatenejo and way back north into the Sea of Cortez and back south again...etc we had less than 20 hours of upwind sailing.

Sailing in the Salish Sea (Olympia Washington to north of the Canadian Gulf Island) for 10 years we did a lot of upwind sailing and really made good use of the RF genoa and big staysail.

I've sailed from Seattle to San Diego twice in boats other than mine (Tartan 42 and Roberts 68).

Almost all the sailing was with reefed main and poled out genoa or spinnaker. About 20% of the time we were reaching with full big genoas and main. About 5% of the time we had reefed mains and reefed genoas.

The Tartan that I sailed from Seattle to Bara de Navidad and back to San Diego carried a big main, a 150% light genoa, 125% genoa, a 110% heavy jib, a big spinnaker and a storm spinnaker. We used all those sails on occasion between Seattle and Puerto Vallarta.

The best cruising boat I ever sailed was a highly customized Abel Apogee extended to 53' that weighed 33,000 pounds in cruising trim and had an extra tall carbon fiber mast. It had been sailed from New Zealand to Maine, down to Annapolis, and I took it non-stop to Virgin Gorda.

It had a big main, RF 135% genoa, a big spinnaker, trysail, and 100% genoa. We only used the main, genoa, and spinnaker despite 35 knots and 20 foot seas for three days.
