Internally she has a couple of South African coins glued to the mast and two small metal shields.

The previous owner said she was South African built and sailed across, eventually ending up in Darwin where I bought her.

She is single chined ply, timber mast and strongly rigged and when the wind rises above 10 knots she sails very well.

If someone could look at the pics on my profile page and guess her pedigree I would be very happy.

If she is a RCOD I would love to have some history on the design sailing, tuning tips etc. and any other information anyone has.

Good evening Terry,

I have just stumbled accross this post of yours by accident. How the internet have shrunk our world.

Your boat! I knew it well.
Firstly, it is a Dogger by vd Stadt. Quite a few were built in Cape Town during the mid-sixties.
Shadowfax belonged to two friends of mine, Mickey and Ingrid Alchin. They kept the boat in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. At the end of 1982 they set off West about on a planned circumnavigation and voyaged through Panam as far as Australia where they decided to get Aus citizenship and to make Aus their new home. They flew out to Port Elizabeth once or twice since then and I saw them again.
They thought I was the greatest thing since sliced bread 'cause I taught them astro nav before they left. No cheap GPS in those days and I think a Satnav would have cost more than what they paid for the boat. The Alchins were two tiny folk and their nicknames were the Hobbits and we always said they were the only folk small enough to cruise round the world in a Dogger.
I helped them step that wooden mast. Wonder if it still the same one. Heafty almost square section which Mickey said made the boat roll like hell.
The Dogger is very different from the Royal Cape One Design. The One Design is 9.14 mts long, extremely narrow and has a very deep fin keel with a bit of a bulb at the bottom. And a fractional rig. It weighs next to nothing and will leave the Dogger behind in all conditions. Downwind the One Design simply flies and must the fasted bang for bucks around to this day.

Kindest regards,

Banjo.

Re: Royal Cape One Design - Information

Hi, I live in George, Western Cape, South Africa. The yacht is in Port Elisabeth some 320 km away. I tend to launch her there, once seaworthy and sail her down to Mosselbay, 50 km south of George.

Thanks. I'm quite excited (and apprehensive).

Good afternoon,
The folk who owned the boat in Port ELizabeth and who sailed her to Aus, were Mickey and Ingrid Alchin. I don't have contact details for them but they settled in Aus. in the late 1980's. Try facebook maybe?
They were great folk.
Tell me, are the little regatta shields still stuck to the bulkhead? If so, please take a pic and post it here. I should be able to give some background to the regattas.
Regards,
Frans.
