Has anyone done a 360? I'm just curious to know if sailboats do 360's or if they get stuck bottom up? I know multi hulls would tend to bottom up but it seems to me the blue water monohulls would rend to go all the way.

From what I've read as long as your keel is intact the boat will always right itself even with sails up. I have never done this and I imagine that with sails up chances are you'll break the mast. It's all speculation until it happens but in theory it makes sense...the keel weighs a ton or more.

I've been thinking a lot about this and I began to wonder if one had full sails up when it happened if the weight of the water soaked sails wouldn't offset the weight of the keel and keep the boat at 180 degres instead o9f going 360. The resistance of the sails against the water and there weight keeping the boat bottom in the air.
thanks for the video it most definitely has convinced me to make sure everything is battened down so nothing flys in a roll over.

If I understand the numbers correctly -my boat rates a 120.
Meaning in a theoretical world she can roll with the mast 30 degrees below the surface and right herself.

Most recommendations I've read place 120 as the min. number for offshore work. Knowing my boat - my conclusion is she may survive and she may not which places her in the realm of coastal - not ocean IMO.

Having said that: based on the experience of a couple of friends: I doubt she will roll thru a 360 arc and right. Most likely she will reach her limit of "inverted" stability and right herself on the same side and very likely without the mast up.
A couple of bits of criteria at play here, namely whether a kind sea exists and the speed with which she is rolled.
If the sea keeps pushing....she may well do a 360

I watched a J24 sink in NY harbor a few years back when she was pinned on her hear while flying a spinnaker.
So many variables.....

There is a scene in the movie "All is Lost" which claims a 360 roll. Besides the fact it is filled with technical flaws - go see it.

I have heard stories like "all is lost" but not yet met or talked to anyone having gone through such a thing so I began to wonder. I think demasting would depend upon the amount of sail area at the time of the incident. Bare poles on a bluewater boat and I envision likely very little damage to the structure.

A friend was rolled twice one night in the Indian Ocean earlier this year under bare poles. The second time the boat came up she was without her rig.

Mother Nature doesn't give two hoots to theory. My boat is one of the safest around and yet she has done a couple of 360's. Only the second time she lost the mast.

If your terribly interested in the subject matter there was a book and a Government report after the 1979 Fastnet race... which was yachtings worst disaster. They compared designs and righting moments to their benchmark boat, a Contessa 32 which had a righting moment over 155 degrees. Many of the boats were rolled during that race, most while laying a hull which is not a good strategy with breaking waves. Low ballast ratio's and wide beam also did poorly.
