Rigging for Dolphin 14ft

My brother-in-law gave me his 14.5 ft dolphin sailboat. However, I am confused on how to rig the boat to the rudder. Does the rope tie to the rudder? Pictures are hard to tell. It is not the original line that came with the boat and am unsure if there was a fitting of some sorts to hook onto rudder. Any thoughts or clear pictures so I can see how to proceed.

Thank you

Not familiar with the Dolphin, but if you post some pictures we can probably figure it out.

Howdy and Welcome Aboard CF!

I see this is your first post.

Unfortunately I am not familiar with your boat and your description is unclear. I suggest you add some photos to show exactly what you mean.

Here are my tips on posting photos. I hope this helps you.
________________________

Use Photos to Illustrate Your Posts

Photos also help to clarify, so post photos if you are asking about something like gear on your boat or parts or some problems.

You may at first have some difficulty posting photos (it is common). There is a very good video on Youtube that clearly demonstrates how to post photos on CF. Here is a link to that video: https://youtu.be/NW5n8vZM34c

Also, you may upload a total of 12 photos per post. I often upload 12 images (as two sets of 6 uploaded for one post) when I am writing a profile about a boat.
________________________

Use Photos to Illustrate Requests for Help
For example, if you have a question about using some hardware, engine maintenance, or parts of your boat, post a photo or photos to illustrate your post. Don't assume every boat looks the same. Most boats have some variations in deck hardware, gear upgrades, owner modifications, different engine models and installations, etc.

"Pictures tell a thousand words."
And they help bridge the gap in languages and understanding too.

Dolphin 15 Senior, built in the 70's, but is in good shape. I cleaned it up last night and am going to get some marine paint for bottom and top! Excited to get out this week

Rigging for Dolphin 14ft

Is this the boat you are describing? [ATTACH]

My first boat back in 1969 was a Dolphin Sr. If I recall the main sheet terminates in an eye or hole in the upper edge of the rudder casting. Mine had a bronze clip on the sheet that fitted into the eye. The sheet then ran through the block near the aft end of the boom to the block near the center of the boom and down to the hand of the person sailing the boat. On a boat this size you do not cleat off the main sheet but keep it in your hand. The clip looked like these.

Re: Rigging for Dolphin 14ft

That is it Tayana 42! I will go purchase a clip like that to attach to the rudder. Is the sheet the (Rope)? So I would tie the sheet to the end of the clip.?

Thank you again for helping. Looking forward to going out tomorrow morning!

Yes the sheet is the rope that controls how far out the boom is allowed to go. You can tie it ( a bowline for example ) or look up how to make an eye splice. By the way, I enjoyed the heck out of my Dolphin Sr and learned a great deal by making all the mistakes I could. Oh yeah, read some books about how to sail too.

Will do!
I grew up on a sunfish, however it has been a few years and have been reacquainting myself with sailing tips online. Just picked up life vest and am planning on light wind sailing tomorrow in Mesa, AZ

Thank you again

Re: Rigging for Dolphin 14ft

The sunfish sheet line (line attached to pulleys on the boom) usually attaches to a cable that goes from port to starboard over the tiller.

The Dolphin sheet line attaches to an eye hole on the rudder itself.

I have owned both of these boat and have spent hours upon hours on them. Great little 1-2 person dingy's!

Enjoy!

Re: Rigging for Dolphin 14ft

Many moons ago I sailed a Dolphin Sr. while in High School. Great little boat. Mine even had a cooler built in to the deck just aft of the mast. I added a swivel cleat just behind the daggerboard trunk to hold the main sheet. If yours still has a cast aluminum rudder holder, be careful. They will snap if subjected to too much stress. I found that out the hard way when I tried to scull the boat back home after running out of wind. (Swinging the rudder back and forth to propel the boat.) You can stand on the deck mid-ship with the mast in your hands and paddle like a SUP if need be.
