recovering broken impeller

Hi All,
Last year, I ran the engine without water by accident for few minutes, and I believe that impeller in the water pump had some pieces fractured, and moved the cooling system.
Is there a way to remove these pieces, and where I should look for them.
The engine is Yanmar 2QM15.
Thanks,

Andy

Re: recovering broken impeller

The heat exchanger would be the first and perhaps the last place to look. Do you have one of those stupid sounding "cuff" things? Beware!

Yes, probably the heat exchanger; very small needle nose pliers or surgical clamps can be very handy. I also have some dental picks, but you have to spear the rubber with those and very carefully drag it to where you can grab it with the clamps.

PS: if you still have the rest of that impeller, match up what you find and keep looking until you have all the pieces.

Re: recovering broken impeller

Small pieces might go through the heat exchanger and lodge in the mixing elbow.

Good periodic maintenance anyway to inspect and clean heat exchanger.

Be sure and look in the other direction. The pieces can fall down. I looked thru everything forward, down stream only to find the pieces in full view up stream.

Re: recovering broken impeller

On my boat the impeller bits get trapped at the inlet to the first impeller.

On my boat the easiest / fastest way to collect the bits is to reverse-flush the cooler.
