Questions About Buying an ETAP

Hi everyone,

I'm looking in to the possibility of buying an ETAP 22. I've read quite a bit about them but I'd really like to know if any of you have had first hand experience with them, in any length?

Nothing at all wrong with the Etap22... attractive enough boat with reasonable space for the size... compared to a Corribee21... Corrie's are cuter....
Its just they were mainly a Euro Boat and most on here are 'Cousins'... be patient... sooner or later some one will tell you...
I do believe there are a couple or 3 owners on CF... and likely a few former owners...

Hey Boatman61 - thanx for your headsup Corries are cute! No doubt about that - they're lovely sweet peas but for my personal taste are a bit bendy for me. I like the plain-ness & flatness of the etap. Plus its alleged non-sinkability is appealing to a novice single-hander like me

Finding an etap dealer in AU is like finding water on the moon lol

I know, right??!! I looked up your links RiegelKent & nearly burst at the seams reading the posts about it being the End of World Ideal Escape Boat or somesuch. OMG, the pics of some of the other vessels were fantastic. I wish I'd thought of that orange one - awesome!

I like it b/c it sounds almost impossible to sink in high seas. I love water sailing">blue water sailing but have often crewed on 40-50ftrs with crews between 2 - 14. This time, I want to go solo. Research indicates a little ETAP 22 is about the right size for me single hand and the fact it's hard to sink is an added bonus

Hi Boatman61 - thanx so much for that link. That Sadler 26 looks like a sturdy go-getter. It seems built more for safety than speed, which is fine with me!

My father has an Etap 22. He is very happy with it. He also has a road trailer for moving it. This way, he stores his boat in a hangar for the winter.

I sailed with him once, it is a pleasant little boat, fairly fast for its size and with good seakeeping. There is enough room for 2 adults coastal cruising in summer. The lifting keel is very convenient to reduce the draft but it requires some work with a long screw coming out on the foredeck. As my father has lost some upper body strength, he bought an electric winch handle for raising the keel.

He told me the buoyancy came in handy this summer when he ran aground on rocks and made a hole in the hull. When I see him for Xmas, I will ask for more details.

Etap did that boat trial a few years ago when they opened the sea cocks, let the boat flood down and then sailed home for tea. The only down side I can think of is if water gets into the foam and there was one on the Solent which had a wet hull. However, a good survey would remove that worry.
