Similar with T-shirts.

What I prefer to do is to buy as much as I can from small local businesses where I know the money will go to the local community or businessman. If he can make a profit he can keep his doors open.

If you want to help by giving things away at least buy the stuff from the local shops and give it out. You are supporting their factories too. But, imho, never go back there as they might then expect a hand-out.

A very good point Mark, as long as there is a shop of some kind, the East Africa areas are poor, really poor and frankly i do not know how they make ends meet!

I don't lock my doors at night.
Fred asks me not to as he wants a burglar to play with.
His buddy Scooter wants to play too.

Too bad they hate water and refuse to get on the boat.

Re: Protection from Pirates: The Almost-Perfect Solution

I'm sure most sane people will have realized that many of our posts have been made in jest but, in all seriousness, I do believe that if you feel up to it, it is fairly safe to tackle the casual, opportunistic mutts who tend to show up after the bars close.

A few years ago, returning to our boat late after visiting friends in DC, we saw two guys trying to break in to our boat. My son went one way and I went the other, my son tossed one over the side and when the other one turned around, I straight armed him causing his nose to explode all over his face and we then tossed him over the side as well.

Despite the CCTV camera's everywhere we looked, nobody showed up to see what was going on so we just forced the mutts to stay in the cold water for a while then escorted them through the security gate.

These days, I keep a heavy 14” adjustable wrench handy just in case but I do like the sound of that wasp spray that ChristiGrab mentioned and I think I'll get some of that...James

I love these pirate threads.

I can see someone holding still while you light a bic in front of a spray can so you can spray a 12" flame. Have any of you actually tried it against a person? I don't think so. If you tried it on me you would have both hands busy and unarmed, I could swat you down. Just silly.

And just because wasp spray is supposed to be an irritant (on the label no doubt) I want someone to have a "real life" story that is also true. If you sprayed me with wasp spray I would probably be irritated and you would be a quivering mound of pulp before my throat closed up - if it ever did.

Now bear spray I know would put me down. But for those that missed it - It is considered a weapon in most places so it would be foolish to have it on the chance you would need it as opposed to the chance you would be caught with it and spend some years in a 3rd world jail. (3 days would be enough for me from what I have read - guess I am a sissy.) Or even a 2nd world one. Or even a 1st except for the US where we molly-coddle our prisoners.

And a flare gun, right.

Of course I won't get to find out because I won't be coming aboard to steal from you. And you won't be able to come up with a valid example.

Re: Protection from Pirates: The Almost-Perfect Solution

The UrbanLegends website has an entry on wasp spray for self defense. They're generally negative about it's potential, and include this note...

Quote:
One reader who accidentally received a dose of wasp spray while using it around his home told me he was surprised at how little irritation he felt. 'A gust of wind caused a good splash of the spray to come right back into my right eye," he wrote. "I panicked and started to run to a source of water, only to find there was no adverse reaction at all, no more than being squirted with a water pistol. It took me at least ten seconds to get to the water, and I rinsed it off, and never felt anything from it.'
I don't think I'd want to rely on it when facing an intruder with a knife or gun.

Maybe the best thing to use to attack a robber on the boat is to throw money at him. Bet that slows him down some.

The ultimate passive protection

Just a dash of protection before going ashore and you will protect yourself from muggers, dogs, beggars, rapists, salty sea mistresses and guarantees a quiet corner table to yourself no matter how crowded the bars are

Thats the thing that amazes me about cruisers. They all sleep with the door open. And when they go out during the day the door is still open!

Mad.

Perhaps it is my inner-city upbringing, but in my youth i learned that if you do not look like an easy mark- bad critters with 4 or 2 legs will move on to the next guy.

In that light, the solution was posted many entries ago. A good screen door. That said, there is always plan "B". Be it clorox in a spray can, bear spray brought on board for the humanitarian disposal of rats, or some other chemical that will deter the bad guy from hacking through the screen.

If all else failed and I felt my life was in imminent peril, I would pop the PLB/EPIRB... The SAR fee is cheap compared to transporting and burying remains. Even if the help will not get there in time, they will not know. It would be a great bargaining point when trying to save your life...

I don't see the argument that violence is on the increase. But if it is all we really have is passive defense tactics. This includes better entry systems, exterior lighting, Movement detection. All possible with cheap off the shelf components.

Active defense, including various sprays right up to firearms requires too many things to go in your favour. You need to detect the intruder before he sees you. You need to have room to act and possibly hide after. You need the actions to render attacker inert otherwise you may not get a 2nd go. I don't believe in general these will fall your way

I have a 900,000 volt tazer the size of a pkt of fags and an extendable batton and have used them both. Let the bu%&*~s try to come in the hatch way and zap them then cosh them and cable tie them up then off to sea when a decent distance from land (about 100 miles put them over the side. We dont play with guns or intruders if they board us they have NO rights on our boat. Also the authorities dont know whats happened. Most of the time its when you are at anchor that they are a problem. At sea just stay away from the areas of pirates or suffer the results.

Yes, but if you stop thinking with your hands in your pockets you will realize you can't cosh anyone who is above you.

So I say again: Why don't you just lock the companionway door?

People on this thread have me stuffed! Here everyone wants to kill someone.... in the bar here everyone thinks its not possible to happen - even if the blood dripped vicitms came into the bar half would claim conspiracy.... but NO ONE, neither those at the bar, or those here, wish to lock their friggin' doors!

WHY NOT?

Please explain why you don't lock your doors on a boat but do so at home?
