Power Sailor (MacGregor-Style) - But Open-Decked ?

Anyone come accross something like this? - especially in the US.

Am thinking an Open daysailor (maybe with small cuddy) in the 21 - 25 foot range, with outboard to cruise at 12 / 14 knots (the speed for island hopping and maybe towing a donut ) ........but with sails on it , not for passage making but to sail around the bay / for use whilst fishing..........so ultimate sail performance not required.

Also to dry out / be easily trailerable

My intial thoughts are would look something between a Drascombe (sail) and an Orkney - 50hp (albeit both of these under 20 foot):-








Appreciate would be neither fish nor fowl - just curious to see whether anyone else has tried this road over the years............

For a boat like this you will most likely want a boat that has a flat bottom aft. You will need the hull to plane, so you need a hull that looks like a powerboat, not a sailboat (like the Macgregor). You will also most likely want a boat with a center board or dagger boards instead of a keel of any size. You can raise the board while motoring and drop it while sailing. With the board down you will have a hard time getting the boat on a plane. Without a board up you will not be sailing any direction but downwind.

The first boat you have pictured would probably not plane well, if at all. Even if it did plane, I would expect it to eat fuel.

The second baot you have pictures would probably not sail unless you retrofitted a center board or dagger board.

This will do 12kts with a 9hp O/B and can sail at the same speed in good conditions... lots of open deck space and good stowage out the wet....

yeah, I was thinking 2nd boat as the starting point - with leeboards (or centreboard) and just accepting the sailing performance comprimises that involved.

Was kinda curious as to whether anyone had come accross something similar - not looking good so far

Mmmmm. but how do I stop it flipping over?

That would tick quite a few boxes and I have always fancied one of those , but not quite what I am after for this idea.

Drascombe did a range which included the Driver, Lugger, which I grew up with and another which had a cuddy.

The Driver had a Lister inboard diesel and centerboard and was the ideal combination for daysail/trailer. Stable and great for fishing, seaworthy, light to beach/launch and recover.

Cant fault them in my opinion

Well I had to work really hard to lift a hull half outa the water... this aint no plastic fantastic mate... its a 'Proper Boat'
