PLEASE RECOMEND WHERE TO FIND USED MAST

hey guys,

ive been combing the internet and my local spots trying to find and mast and boom..and...its tuff!..i only found Dons marine salvage in florida..nice place, they have a lot of stock..

can anyone recomend some other places please. yes, i already called US spar and got some prices. thats why im looking for a used set up..im looking for a conventional mast

boat is a bene 352 (35ft)
mast is 505.9" (little over 41')
boom is 137" (around 11.5')

note..i am a contractor by trade, if its a little long i will cut it and make modifications..

Re: PLEASE RECOMEND WHERE TO FIND USED MAST

update..i found a local spot that has a mast, its real close in dimentions, specifically, its an 1/8" different from my existing step (ill shave an 1/8" off the step to make it work)..but it is 20" too short..the guy want $500 for it..if i get it ill have to get custom sails for the rest of my life ..unless i can get it extended??? is there such a thing?? maybe i can get a guy to fabricate something..

How badly damaged is the original mast?? Have you checked to see if it might be repaired? Many msts have been cut and sleeved to repair damage or extend them.

good morning captain,

there is no mast..i bought the boat with nothing from the deck up..however i did find a used one at a local yard for $500( its 20" shorter than the stock spec)..as you suggested, a local guy told me i might/should be able to have a sleeve and extention put on it, youre the second guy that has told me this..so maybe this is a viable option..besides a new one is about 5k ...hmm..5k or $500+ fabrication...hmmm..if its doable its a no brainer

Re: PLEASE RECOMEND WHERE TO FIND USED MAST

G'Day KS,

FWIW, all sails that you would be buying for your boat will be "custom". Any sailmaker worthy of the name will come to your boat and take the measurements that are needed to design the sail. It's not like buying a head gasket for a Chevy V-8!

So, that aspect of your proposed mast shouldn't worry you. There would be a small loss of sail area with the shorter mast, and that could have an effect on your light air performance. Considering that you don't have a boom either, you could recoup the area loss with a slightly longer boom. There would be a minor change in the boats balance, but I suspect that it would be unnoticeable to you.

Another thing to be aware of: be sure that the spreaders and shrouds are similar enough to not need modification. IE, if the spreaders on the substitute mast are shorter than the original the shroud angles will be wrong, and if there is a difference in teh number of spreaders there could be chainplate issues as well.

Good luck with it all,

Jim

Re: PLEASE RECOMEND WHERE TO FIND USED MAST

hey guys,

update, i identified the used mast as a "kenyon" , i contacted "rig rite" which unfortunately is THE only company that can make them, i asked them for a price on a 24" section and a sleeve to fabricate an extension. waiting for a response. I saw a bunch of posts on line talking about their how slow they were and poor customer service, but ill reserve judgment and remain optimistic!! as for the spreaders? there are none, my intention if everything works out well is to order the same ones and transfer all measurements onto the new/used mast..

as for sails? i found "secondwind.com" and "minneys yacht surplus" that have hundreds of sails and it just so happens that they have exactly what i need!! hey, if i can get out on the water for my extremely slim budget ill be happy..

keep the info and suggestions coming!! its greatly appreciated!!

thanks

jason

You have to nudge and wink at the cashier to get them to sell you either of those items
