The area you are looking to cruise in is a natural. There are a lot of boats that have sailed that far but are afraid to continue because of the current issues in that part of the world and can not or choose not to ship their boat to the Med. You should have a field day if you really do your homework.

With the negitive out of the way here is a BIG positive. I was looking at a bost in langkwai. The broker was friendly professional AND honest. He knew the boats he has listed. I csn tell you if I deal with a broker it will be him.Plus the price of boats is about half. Ill get you his name if you like..

Yes I have been to Thailand many times and I know what your talking about. I'm sure there are legit companies there, but there are also many snakes. Best way around this is word of mouth. The company I did my sailing lessons was really good, however i wouldn't buy a boat from him he seems like your typical used car salesman, and he's not Thai.

Please send me the details of any contacts you have in Langkwai. From my limited research the boats in Langkwai are not cheaper than Thailand, however I have not been looking for long. I need to go to Langkwai to check things out. Boatshed in Phuket seems to get good recomendations...

That was my thinking. With all the extras I want it is going to cost a lot of money to fitout a ~$120k boat. In australia a water maker is $9500, 12000 btu AC$5500. I am concerned with over capitilising a boat with all the extras. It would be great to find something with at least some of the extras I want. I think the plan is to be on the ground with cash in hand ready to pounce on a good deal.

Does anyone know what this type of gear costs in Langkwai, specifically quality global brands of generators, water makers, AC, inverters, autopilots?

I mean use-able space, not the open airy feeling of say a Hunter with little or no storage space.
Some manufacturers seem to go out of their way to waste no space, if there is a cubic foot, it has an access cover for you to be able to put something in there, many don't.
Point being there are small (storage wise) 38' boats and large (storage wise) 38 ' boats.
A fold away table give the salon an open feeling, but it's nice to have lots of storage lockers

That's the truth. I kind of think that if you feel you need to ask what boat you should get then you shouldn't get a boat!

Thanks. That is one of the reasons for choosing langkawi. Australia is too damn expensive, and flight times to Asia are pretty reasonable.

I think I can get stuff from American suppliers freighted. When I get a boat what I'll probably do is put it on the hard where I can be involved in the fitout. I'm an electrician and refrigeration mechanic so would like to be involved in the work as I'll be the one maintaining everything. Hopefully that won't be breaking any visa laws.

One problem is while I understand the KISS principle, I will probably be tempted to go overboard with gadgets

True. Thanks for all the advice everyone. I did find a nice Bavaria Ocean but
after further consideration and a recent charter I think a cat would be more suitable for me.

A bit more dollars, but while I could get a mono sooner, a cat is something I could hang onto long term without needing to upgrade and loosing $$ on another customisation/refit. Also less draft, and much less likely to spill the long island iced teas

No offense sir, but it doesn't sound like you understand the KISS principle at all. And switching from a mono to a multi from one post to the next, suggests a giant gap in your overall know how. Get a cold 12 pack and start reading, you have a ways to go.

I most definitely do. KISS doesn't have to prevent me having a few toys onboard for fun as well as all the usual cruiser stuff such as water maker, radar, etc.

My first preference was definitely a cat. I detoured based on the theory of a mono can be purchased sooner and on the water earlier as it is less $$, but I have decided to wait and get the boat that I really want and not compromise just to get it 12 months or so earlier.

I do admit I am still learning though

While I wish you well and suspect you'll enjoy whatever you decide to purchase, it bears mentioning that the KISS method suggested does not typically include things like water-makers and radar etc.
