I think jrd22 had it right back on page two! In the past these were better defined terms. Now they're just marketing tools. All the screened in porches are now lanais; sun roofs are now moon roofs. Can I interest you in our new deck salon?

Bob, I remember racing with you once out of Seattle on a boat you had designed, I think it was called Eclipse. Dark blue hull. Nearly 20 years ago maybe, ai yi yi. Anyway, at the time I was the young guy on a boat full of old guys. I've always remembered you saying, on the subjects of client satisfaction that "A boat is never to stiff and the winches are never too big.'

I should have added I now have a big old motor sailor of my own, at least I think that was how it was marketed originally. It does not have an inside steering position though, unless you count the autopilot control, and you are able to see out to steer. I wouldn't want to try and dock from down below though.

Here's a question. Has anyone ever been aboard a pilothouse with twin helms that DIDN'T use hydraulic steering? Mine is twin Teleflex Capilano...

Actually Christian, the 2nd and 3rd photos you posted (cygnus2?) are identical to mine. I have the early version of the Islander before it morphed into the Freeport 41. A redesign that I think Mr. Perry might have had some part in, though maybe not so much as a lot of Freeport 41 owners would like to claim.

I remember you from that race. Aren't you the guy that stayed in the head the entire race?

Not that race. I was pretty much doing all the trimming. We went by another boat of yours which I won't name to protect the guilty, and you mentioned that they would go faster if the boat wasn't manned entirely by crew standing around 'in Peacoats and watch caps.' I remember thinking, well there's plenty of guys just standing around here in Eddie Bauer gear.

The motorsailors/pilothouses/deck salons (this is gettin ridiculous)that I'm familiar with either use all hydraulic or, like my Brewer, there's Capilano hyd. inside and standard chain and cable in the cockpit. I like having the two seperate systems, but it takes some getting used to. You have to move a lever on a valve at the inside helm to use the hydraulic steering, and if you forget to switch it back before going out to the cockpit you get to go back in and do it (this only happens when you are in a hurry ).

OK, not sure where my boat fits in here...is she a motor sailor?..maybe, but no inside steering. Built in S. Africa to a Van de Stadt design. She is similar to the Trintella Victory 40.Boat pixs Aug 11 007.jpg

I agree, keep posting your pilot house/Motor Sailor yachts here!! I would love to purchase a Buizen but the price is a little high for my designed budget. But, with that yacht, you do get what you pay for!! It is gorgeous inside and out with excellent top notch craftsmanship.
