Pearson 365 / 367

I was wondering, the 365 was designed as a ketch. There are a few 367 cutter rigs out there. Same hull I believe. Does the cutter suffer any performance problems since the boat was designed as a ketch?

The 365 was never a great performer under sail. Adequate, but not exceptional in any way. I spent several weeks aboard a new one in the Virgin Islands some years ago. The smaller Pearson 10M sloop (which I spent several months aboard in the same area) is a much faster boat.

I'm not familiar with the '367', but a cutter rig -- presumably with a taller mast -- would likely be more efficient than the original ketch rig, and might be expected to improve performance somewhat.

Re: Pearson 365/367?

The Pearson 367 as opposed to the 365 ketch or sloop is a horse of quite a different color. The 367 has a larger skeg rudder, deeper keel/draft, a couple feet taller mast stepped further aft and interior is somewhat different than the 365. The 367 should be a better sailor but not drastically better as the sail area isn't a lot larger than the 365.

The Pearson 365 was buillt as both a ketch and a sloop with more being being built with the split rig. They have fairly shallow draft so won't be a terror to weather and sail area/displacement ratio doesn't put them in the light air wizard realm. The sloop has a longer boom and mainsail foot to add back some of the area lost with the mizzen. Would assume that Bill Shaw did his homework and the sloop and ketch will still balance out.

Both the 367 and 365 are roomy cruising boats that are very well designed for that purpose. The galley looks great, living accomodations and storage good, really like the separate shower in the head. On a price for designed use, these boats are some of the best values out there.

Re: Pearson 365/367

We have a 1979 Pearson 365 sloop and LOVE her! She is a great boat for cruising the Chesapeake Bay and can get into areas that some of our friends with deeper drafts can't enjoy! We are the 3rd owner, bought her from an older Dr. who could no longer give her the care she needed- we brought her back to life and she's been very good to us! We have contemplated buying a larger and newer boat, but keep coming back to the same conclusion:she's all we need to do what we want to do! We plan on sailing her back and forth to the Bahamas and Caribbean in a few years (when we retire)!
