Painting a deck in the windy marina

Greetings. Any suggestions on what is a economical way to paint a fiberglass deck in a windy marina. Awlgrip? Or is there a new product that is better. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Re: Painting a deck in the windy marina

The higher end 2 part paints are nice and more durable but less forgiving and a windy slip is not a forgiving environment.

We did our last boat with a one part enamal and 3yrs on when we sold her, she was still shiney with zero waxing (Interlux Brightside). The downside was it's not as tough as the high end paints. Drop an anchor and you scratch thru the paint...BUT...it was really easy to touch up. We kept a quart of paint and you couldn't tell where we did touch ups unless you got within a foot or so of the touch up.

Brightside will shrink and crack within 2-3 years unless its primer is used first.

I haven't seen that to be true yet....it's been five years, the paint has dulled but it's not shrunken yet.

There's a new product called KiwiGrip that I'm thinking about trying. I found several threads about it on different forums & it appears to be easy to use & hold up well.

Do you really want a shiny (slippy) deck? If not, masonry paints do a great low cost job! If you go that way, am sure you will find lots of advice on the various fora - economic cruisers seem very content with the results. It will also wipe off quite well whilst still wet if it gets where it is not wanted eg cars parked too close!

If you are using a fancy paint and need a lot of non slip powder, I believe monumental masons and the like get quite a lot of marble dust. Otherwise very fine sand (bird fanciers feed it to canaries I think) sprinkled on top of the paint before it goes off. The surplus is brushed off when the paint is cured!

Some folk use sugar and let it dissolve away to leave a rough surface but I haven't tried that! Best talk to someone who has used the paint you decide to go for if you are not sure.
