Re: Outstanding Boats - A Special Selection of Unusual and Noteworthy Boats I Find

Standfast 40

A racer/cruiser design from a Dutch yard known for quality construction and nice speed. Noteworthy is that Standfast 40 boats won 1st and 2nd in one of the Fastnet races in the mid 1970s. About 110 were built. As of November 2016, there were 3 of the Standfast 40s listed on Yachtworld, with prices ranging from $33K to $61K. While most are in Europe, I did see one Standfast 40 in Mexico (and the lowest priced at about $33K).

A quick look at the boats shows some in better condition than others. Note that there are three models of this boat with one model "P" having a low coach roof, and evidently some of the boats were sold in the USA as a Palmer Johnson 40 or PJ40. One is shown with wheel helm, while two others have tiller helm. Most of the boats have a flush deck. The hull has a fin keel with a skeg hung rudder.

The boats were designed by Frans Maas, and the Standfast company was in the Netherlands.

Draft = 7'

The photos I am posting below are from a mix of boats and are uploaded to illustrate the boat design. I happen to like the design, and think it looks pretty sleek and sexy and fast. It is a design from the 1970s and it shows when you look at the shape of the hull (IOR influenced design).

You can find the stats on sailboatdata.com

Here is a nice looking 1976 boat listed now for $54,000 in the UK.

Re: Outstanding Boats - A Special Selection of Unusual and Noteworthy Boats I Find

A comment about the Standfasts: some of them need repair to the aft end of the keel area of the hull: insertion of a floor and stringers. Also, Maas specified mild steel chain plates below the deck; the s/s portion above, so that one needs to inspect the chain plates, done by removing the celings panels from the pilot berths, as if there has been salt water intrusion due to leaks at the deck penetration, the mild steel portion of the chain plates may be rust-weakened.

We had a 36' footer (and there is a fairly recent thread about them archived on CF), it was necessary on ours, made in the US, to effect repairs both places.

MacGruer International 8 Meter (42ft), 1963 WOOD

Steady's NOTES:
This boat is lovely to look at and has an outstanding racing history of wins that is admirable and has wonderful details and outstanding condition. It is a racer/cruiser made of wood, and looks like a sweet boat to me. You need to see all of the detail photos on the sale listing to appreciate how nice the condition is of this yacht. I will post a few photos here, but there are more that are nice to see. As is this boat when she is on the water. I enjoy seeing boats sailing, and the photo showing her under sail is striking.

Re: Outstanding Boats - A Special Selection of Unusual and Noteworthy Boats I Find

1906 MacKay Schooner 42ft WOOD

Some sailors have a romance with boats and the sea.
What sailor hasn't at one time wondered what it would be like to live aboard an old wood boat, enjoying a bit of salty history? Someplace like Sausalito?

This boat is old, and there is no denying that. But if you look at her, she appears to have been loved. And her exterior may be somewhat plain, but she has a cozy interior that looks like a warm place to shelter any sailor. Notice the cast iron wood stove, to take the chill off those foggy nights. Notice the davits from which you can launch your lapstrake wood dinghy. Notice the brass binnacle for your compass and the wood spoke wheel. Notice the butterfly hatch and long bowsprit and gaff rig. She's an old girl, but she still has something to appeal to a salty sailor.

Re: Outstanding Boats - A Special Selection of Unusual and Noteworthy Boats I Find

I have just been notified by a CF Member that they have just bought this boat, and they first learned about it from THIS thread!

Congratulations!

I am very happy this thread has served to bring a CF Member and a Boat together.

And as I posted earlier, "Good ones go quickly" so it is a good idea to subscribe to this thread so you won't miss other upcoming Outstanding Boats.

So, the Royal Huisman built Van de Stadt boat is OFF the market, but now part of the huge fleet of CF Members.

Steady's NOTES:

1. This is an ALUMINUM boat, built by one of the very best Dutch boat building yards. This is important. I like that.

2. This boat was built by Dutch shipwrights. Take a look at the interior. I like it.

3. This boat has raced and done well. It has proven fast. I like that.

4. This boat has almost new Volvo 30HP Turbo Engine and numerous updated gear including self tailing winches. It is a Volvo Turbo, but it is practically new. I like that.

5. It has a distinctive appearance. I like it.

6. It has teak decks. I like teak decks. Yes, teak decks can be a problem IF they cause leaks in plywood decks beneath them. But, is that going to be a problem on THIS boat? I happen to like teak decks for good footholding grippiness. And if I were sailing this boat in northern areas (PNW, Great Lakes, NE) I could live with them. Just be aware this is a personal choice. Some will avoid them, but understand WHY they avoid them.

From the sale listing on Yachtworld:

"This gorgeous 1971 Van de Stadt designed 39 foot masthead sloop is truly a rare find. One of 2 hulls crafted at Royal Huisman Shipyards in the Netherlands, best known for their superyachts, this aluminum built, teak-decked racer-cruiser has had an illustrious racing career beginning in the late 70’s.

As “Pied Piper” she was involved with the illustrious Chicago Yacht Club and placed competitively in many events from the Windy City to Milwaukee. She retired from competition in the early 2000’s and has been used as a family cruiser since.

The quality of her construction is evident and her sailing abilities well-proven. She needs a little attention here and there but is in sail-away condition and eagerly awaiting the spring.

She has a good set of sails and was recently repowered with a 30 HP Volvo turbodiesel, as well as new batteries replaced this year. Her older winches were replaced with new Barients and her running and standing rigging are ready for action. A 2013 survey is available.

Her owners are moving inland and all offers are encouraged. "

Re: Outstanding Boats - A Special Selection of Unusual and Noteworthy Boats I Find

Jumbo 46

2010
Asking Price = $350,000 AUS
Location = New Zealand
_______________

Steady's NOTES:
This boat is one I would be excited to sail and proud to own. It has many features I admire and looks like an Outtanding Boat to me.

Hard Dodger Design
Notice the integrated and protective Hard Dodger built in the cabin top.Photos on the sale listing show this very well from inside the companionway hatch.

Flush Deck Hybrid or Curved Cabin Top

Noteworthy is the deck design that incorporates a bulge for the integral hard dodger over the companion way and a long hump or curved cabin top surface that blends smoothly into the deck. This design appears based on the long distance race boats built for singlehanded around the world races. It provides a sheltered area for crew to sit near the companionway. Not your typical dodger.

I have written about a curved deck or curved cabin top before in a post last year. My view is that it provides a nice horizontal standing surface no matter what angle of heel the boat is on. There are also areas of flat deck on the sides for when the boat is not sailing, that provide a walkway for going forward in a marina or sheltered water. But, I really do appreciate the curved or humped deck design and consider that a big plus for a boa that would be sailing long distances, possibly in high latitudes. It is a seaworthy design feature seen in Round The World (RTW) racing boats.

There is much I like about this boat, which is very unusual as a cruising boat. It has twin rudders and twin tillers. It has a lifting keel of high performance design.

I will provide a link to the sale listing for one that is in New Zealand. Take a look.

I also like the large round opening portlights on the cabin top. There is much more to this boat than just those shapes, but they are eye catching.

I like the spacious look inside and how those large cabin top portlights show a view (when boat is heeled and let in a lot of light. To me, the interior looks very nice for a modern boat and looks comfortable.

Re: Outstanding Boats - A Special Selection of Unusual and Noteworthy Boats I Find

Lavranos 11.5m Fast Cruiser
LOA: 38.5 feet
LWL: 37 feet
Draft: 6’ 9” / fin keel
Beam: 13.58 feet
Displacement: 19,000 pounds
Bridge Clearance: 59 feet
Ballast: 6,600 pounds

Hello Steady Hand,

Thanks for starting this great thread and for inviting me to add my unusual and noteworthy boat to the list. It is an aluminum Lavranos 11.5m Fast Cruiser with an integral hard doghouse. She comes from the drawing table of well known designer Angelo Lavranos and was built in Cape Town by the Jacobs Brothers. To my knowledge, only two have been built. This is a boat designed for fast, offshore work from the outset, built to last and easily managed by a single hander. Some of the unique features of this boat include:

Integral hard doghouse

Very streamlined aluminum doghouse that gives the boat a sporty look. It starts out as a hard dodger. Two people can sit under it in the cockpit and it provides protection from the elements on passage. It keeps you dry and out of the wind, but you are only one step away from the action. It also has a window in the top, so you can see the mainsail. Continuing into the interior, the doghouse flows into the coachroof, providing extra light and headroom. If you sit on top of the companionway steps you can look through the forward and side windows as well, but I usually sit under the doghouse in the cockpit on long passages and just stand up every now and then to peek over for an excellent view of the surroundings. My wife however prefers to sit on the companionway steps.

Easy access to all systems

Easy access is important while cruising and I believe that most production boats these days forget about this important feature. For example, this boat has large inspection plates on all three diesel tanks which makes cleaning them a snap. The steering quadrant and cables can be accessed by simply removing two aluminum plates (even while underway). A very large portion of the floor can be removed fairly easily giving you complete access to the bilge. Ceiling panels have Velcro and can be removed to access wiring.

Engine closer to center

Engines are often placed under the companionway stairs. This boat's engine is positioned further forward, which puts the weight were it belongs and provides almost 360 degrees access to the engine for maintenance/repairs. Another benefit is that the shaft seal is easily accessible by removing a floor board. The only downside is more noise in the saloon, but you can't have it all.

Aluminum construction

What can I say, I am a fan. If done right, it is great. Handrails, chain plates, stanchion bases, pul/pushpit bases, etc. are welded to the deck and the deck is welded to hull, which results in a very stiff and dry boat. Also, an unpainted hull is very practical and low maintenance.

Deep and strong fixed keel

No keel bolts to worry about and no keel maintenance. The keel is welded to the hull. However, the welds around the keel are not what is holding the keel to the boat. Thick keel plating that continues into the boat and that is welded to the boat's interior stringers and frames is what holds up the keel. The keel construction is very sturdy and will survive a major grounding or collision. In addition, the fairly deep draft of 6' 9" and 6,600 pounds of lead ensure a very stable boat with great upwind performance.

Bright and airy interior

The light oak interior and bright and airy feel (courtesy of the doghouse) makes down below a pleasant place to be for long periods of time. The doghouse helps avoid the "cave"-like atmosphere that most other seaworthy monohulls suffer from. The one-inch Lexan windows will stand up to the Southern Ocean conditions for which the boat was built and designed.

For sale

After almost 6 years of ownership and three years of extensive cruising, this boat is currently for sale. For more information, please see http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...-a-175394.html

The asking price is $124,000.

Re: Outstanding Boats - A Special Selection of Unusual and Noteworthy Boats I Find

SV TRANCE,

Thanks for adding your OUTSTANDING boat to this discussion.
I really like what I see in your boat.

Since the hard dodger is such an important part of the deck design (and overall design and possibly crew comfort offshore), please post some photos of the boat closer up so we can see the outside of the Dodger and inside too (if you have the photos) and feel free to add those same photos to the "Hard Dodger Illustrated Guide" thread too, in case you have not done already (and post a link to this post up above in that thread too). The photo you post showing the boat in profile is a bit hard to see the design, since the POV is from far away.

From what I can see in these few photos, your boat looks very appealing to me as a fast blue water cruiser in ALUMINUM.

Maybe a minor point, but I also like the choice made on the settee upholstery. The bolsters or curved shapes look comfortable and I like the light color covering.

Shearwater 39

LOA = 43'
Designer = Dudley Dix
Built = South Africa

Asking Price = $210,000
Location = Seattle

Year 1990

New Listing today in Yachtworld: 1990 Shearwater 39 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

Steady's NOTES:
What really caught my eye about this boat is the interior. I like what I see, especially the use of light (white) surfaces on bulkheads and "ceiling" in the berths. The interior looks nicely designed for comfort and is different, or outstanding in finish.

Also notice the clipper bow and the rounded cockpit and stern hung rudder. Unusual to see those in a more recently built boat.

And, as a cruising boat feature, notice the size of the tanks. Something that is missing on many new production boats.

From the Sale Listing:
"Centime" is a true bluewater beauty ready to sail the world. Made in South Africa and custom designed by world-renowned naval architect Dudley Dix, she is highly capable of navigating rigorous weather. Stunningly elegant and artfully crafted, "Centime" offers traditional lines above the water and a fast modern fin keel and sleek underbody. Her classic design starts with her clipper bow and follows through her graceful sheer, classic tumblehome, horseshoe cockpit and champagne-glass stern. Her cabin is well appointed with Corian countertops, numerous opening ports and a bright interior. Handcrafted features abound, made from Burmese Teak, holly, birds-eye maple and mahogany.

Fully outfitted for safety, ease of handling and extended passage-making she offers a robust stability curve and can be easily managed from the cockpit. Maintained to high standards and outfitted for world cruising she possesses a reliable Volvo engine, large water and fuel tanks, solar panels, wind generator, a high-capacity watermaker, autopilot, self-steering wind vane, AIS, SSB, satellite phone and has been recently refitted with over $70,000 of equipment and upgrades.

Shearwaters have won the Cruising World’s Design Awards and Annapolis Boat Show’s “Best Traditional Voyagers" and “Best Cruising Boats.”

Once you sail Centime you will understand why the former editor of Cruising World chose her sistership, Ithaca, as her own private yacht."

Hello Steady Hand,

Good point, please see below a few short videos of the deck and hard dodger. I also included some design drawings. Additional photos of the boat can be found at For Sale - $139,000

The admiral deserves all the credit for the upholstery and will be pleased with your comment. It is indeed very comfortable and easy to clean.

Cheers,

svTrance
