Outboard . . . Transom vs Lazarette

What are the pros and cons...your opinion.


whant to close that hole and use my lazarette as sail locker.

I would do the same. Get that engine so it can lift out of the water where it won't slow you down under sail.

If you close that existing hole it will improve the boat. Sailing with a fixed prop in the water is like dragging a bucket.

My vote is for the motor well. I have one on my boat and believe me the convenience is worth it. If you don't have remote controls for your outboard it is totally useful. It just makes dealing with the outboard way easier and less precarious. It also never lifts out in waves.

If you sail in big swell, in the laz. If you sail on a calm body of water, the kicker plate would be okay.

Plus it just looks cleaner to not have crap hanging off of your stern. We all know that sailing is a fashion show.

My Haida 26 had the outboard on the transom, pain in the ass to drop and use it, try it in heavy following seas one time an it will be back in the well.........Motor would totally submerge with a following sea, they don't run very well under water. My Haida is plenty fast enough, seems like I'm alway's trying to slow it down, to hell with the drag thing................................Michael....sk ipper of the Ruby Jean

When it's in the well, are you able to lift it out enough to untangle a rope in the prop? Can you devise a vertical motorboard lifting system in the well that would kill two or three birds with one stone:
1) able to untangle rope on prop
2) reduce drag when sailing
3) keep it inboard and thus easier to start/lift/repair

It's a lot safer to lift it out inside the boat, than over the back end. Would be pretty hard to lose the motor inside the boat.

I just leave the motor in neutral when sailing, seems to work just fine.

I would recomend using the motor in the well. If crossing oceans, maybe stowe it below. I have never tangled a line on my lower unit.....Michael

My Corribee has the motor mounted on a bracket off the stern.... any sea and it starts lifting out of the water and is useless 50% of the time... in an emergency on a lee shore I might as well throw it over the side for all the good it is..
The Hurley 22 however had it in a well in the Lazarette... served me well in 7metre sea's running into Viviero on Spains N coast (Costa del Morte)... wind to strong for more than a hankie... only problem was a swamping of the engine a coupla times but the Honda fired up again after a coupla pulls...
As for drag... its negligible... stick with the hole... it'll serve you 10x better than the bracket

wonder if I cauld make a plug aronde the shaft so that water dont splash in the lazarette?...my boat has a very large engin well with a lazarette hatch to fit a V8...would be a shame not to use it.

Mine had a purpose built plug that fitted in when the engine was out...
I however screwed stiff rubber flaps in that the prop and shaft pushed through then closed up tight to the shaft once the prop was through.. \!/... but not so severe.... cut down wash loads

Another thing to consider is the weight distribution. 75 lbs aft of your stern is quite a bit different than 75 lbs more forward in your lazarette. Makes a difference in performance on a 28 and smaller boat.

Tansom hung advertises to thieves, However in tight corners you can unlock it and turn it to use its thrust sideways as needed. Obviously, its more likely to have a swim on the transom so a good lanyard is vital.

Its quieter with the outboard on the bum. There is no water sloshing around and making you 1/4 of a knot slower either.

Its easier to check for ropes before starting and also easier to view the water stream after starting.
